Would anyone be able to identify this man for me. Just his dob and parent's names eould do. Roderick MacLeod was born in the village of Back, Isle of Lewis. He ran away from his home in Back and made his way to Stornoway. He either joined a ship in Stornoway or got the ferry to the mainland and joined the Royal Navy. In 1892 he was on board HMS Hyacinth, and in due cours was on HMS Orama in WW1.

Can you clarify his correct surname?
Subject says Re: Roderick MacLean
Post says Roderick MacLeod

Have you looked for him on the Scottish 1881 census which is free to search here

No problem (I have many of them) but you need to amend your subject header

Done that.

The most likely Roderick in 1881 and living in Back has parents as Kenneth and Margaret
I think this might be him:

Note - Familysearch has him as aged 5 in 1881 but other sites have him as aged 8, which fits with the birth date that I've linked to.
Added - or FS has a different one - as you say McLeod and Roderick were pretty common in that area (and still is!).

So he never went Back to Back CB? ;D Couldnae resist it!
Skoosh.

By the way, Back is part of the parish of Stornoway
