Title: Matilda Steinson and Patrick Connolly elopement
Post by: PConnolly on Tuesday 25 April 17 19:15 BST (UK)
Matilda Steinson was born around 1828 we believe in County Monaghan.  She was supposedly the daughter of a wealthy farmer.  She eloped with a farm hand, Patrick Connolly, but was chased by her father and brothers.  They escaped and settled on Prince Edward Island Canada.

Trying to determine if there were wealthy landowners named Steinson or Stinton around Castle Leslie area in the 1830 and 1840's. He was Catholic, she might have been Church of Ireland

Stevenson, Stephenson & Steen are other variations of the surname.

Griffith's Valuation is a bit later but might give some clues-

Could Steenson be a variation?
There are a few Steenson in Monaghan 1826, one Robert is in the Townland of Mullapike which isn't too far from Castle Leslie, he has about 10 Irish acres, not a big holding but more than most, might be worth considering.

Thank you for the information. I'm sure Steenson could be a variation. I wonder if 10 acres would require a farm hand ? I can find no birth or baptism records for Matilda Steinson.  Not a surprise if she were Catholic.  Really quite a mystery woman.  All we know for sure is they eloped and ended up on PEI in Canada, Lot 39, King's County, Sinnott Road - both listed as Irish on the census forms.  She survived until after the 1891 census and Patrick survived until after the 1901 census. Here is some of their offspring info from Prince Edward Island.  With the oldest named John Bernard, I wonder if her father was named Bernard?

2. i JOHN BERNARD CONNOLLY 10/16/1847 - 1914/5 on PEI, Canada
ii Teresa Connolly ? - ? m. Frank O'Brien ? - ?

iii Mary Ellen Connolly ? - ? m. Lawrence Byrne ? - ?

iv William Connolly 1853 - 1900 m. Anne McInnis 1864 - 1963

v Michael Connolly ? - ? m. Jennie Skid ? - ?

vi Matilda Connolly 1870 - ? m. John Clarkin ? - ?

Nothing to do with religion- civil registration of births started in 1864. Many church records (or all denominations) don't go back to that period. Have you searched online Catholic Parish Registers yet? arranged by parish and if period you need isn't included click on link to Irish Ancestors and Roots Ireland near bottom of page to see if earlier registers can be found elsewhere-
