Title: Thomas Whiting born Handcross
Post by: mamor on Thursday 27 April 17 16:51 BST (UK)
I'm trying to establish the parents of Thomas Whiting (sometimes spelled Whiteing).

The 1851,61 & 71 census's all indicate that he was born 1803/04 in Handcross.  The 1881 census shows him as being born in Brighton.

He may have been a non-conformist, I'm not sure.  I have been unable to find a baptism for him online and don't have much experience researching Sussex records.

Many thanks in advance for any help.  :)

When and where did he marry?  Handcross residents would probably have attended Slaugham church as that was the nearest.

Thank you for the reply.  He married Sarah Rachael Norris 2 Nov 1835 at St Mary Newington.

Someone on Ancestry has his date of birth as 2 Nov 1803 but I don't know where this info is sourced from.

Do you know if Slaugham baptisms are online (I have tried the obvious big sites) or if there was a non-conformist church there at all?

Many thanks

The witness at their wedding Rachael Dobridge Norris could have been her sister Bapt 2/2/1814 St Mary Newington parents Richard and Sarah.

Another spelling to look for is Whitting, as used by son Benjamin.

Slaugham baptisms are online on the Sussex Family History Group site which has records for members but there do not seem to be any Whiting baptism entries for the correct time frame.  There is one marriage in 1801 for William Whiteing to Hannah Bishop but it would be pure guesswork to connect them with Thomas.
I have a CD of non conformist register transcripts.  The nearest to Handcross seem to be Cuckfield and Horsham but I can't see any Whiting entries.  In fact the only Whiting entries on the entire disc are in Rye.  I have checked Whitting too.

There seems to have been a Thomas Whiting born 1807 in Newington who could get confused with the Handcross 1803 one. :o

There's a website devoted to them.
Here's Thomas
http://williamwhiteing.weebly.com/thomas-whiteing-1803.html

According to the author of all this, he was the son of William and Hannah (Bishop)
You could have a look, see if and how their research stacks up

Thank you for all the replies - very kind of you all.

I have the info on his wife Sarah Norris and on him going forward from his marriage.

I have seen the website and it is very interesting but it's always good to see the actual records yourself rather than make a speculative tree (I'm not suggesting the tree on the website is speculative).

I think I will pencil in his parents as William and Hannah and keep looking for confirmation.  In the meantime I will take a look at the tree on Family Search and at the Thomas born in Newington.

Many thanks again  :)
