Have you tried looking for the children?

We can't help much, as the 1911 census is still covered by copyright issues.

Lilian is in Salisbury.

Possible marriages for three of the children at Bulford
Lilian Hayter to Harry Harris in 1915
Emily Hayter to Ernest Hickson, also in 1915
Florence Hayter to Herbert John Scott in 1921

They seem to have been living at Bulford Camp, and say father William Hayter was employed at the Barracks

There's a family tree on Family Search for Mary Ann Applegate, L2S9-6G9 , but it does'nt give much more info than we already know except that William was her 2nd husband but nothing to back that up.

Emily 1911 is in Salisbury

There's a Mary Ann Hayter living in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1911. Mary Ann gives her birth place as "Esagan Harold Herefordshire" but as far as I can see there's no such place. There is also a death for Mary Ann Hayter 1928, Newport.

Appear to be no more Hayter births with mmn Applegate after Florence in 1900.

I just tried a free index search of the 1939 Register, for Mary Hayter born 1864 +/-2
Which brought up
Mary A Hayter, born 1864, in Carshalton U.D., Surrey
living with Ernest Hickson and 1 more person (+ 1 more person who is officially closed)

Possible marriages for three of the children at Bulford
Lilian Hayter to Harry Harris in 1915
Emily Hayter to Ernest Hickson, also in 1915
Florence Hayter to Herbert John Scott in 1921

Death of William?
June 1935 Amesbury 5a 154
Hayter, William
age 72

I think we are going to have to scrub that one.
Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index suggests it is a different William (who was married to an Emily)
