Title: Stephen Flitter

I am trying to find the marriage of Stephen Flitter to a Caroline (poss. maiden name Jefferies). Stephen was born in 1843 in or around Chieveley in Berks. I have tried Free BMD but no luck.

Any info will be gratefully received.

New GRO Index has Thomas Flitter (1870) Mothers mn as HICKS

So we have;
HICKS, ARTHUR , no Mothers mn
GRO Reference: 1867  M Quarter in NORTHLEACH  Volume 06A  Page 367

Fits with 1871 Census
Stephen Flitter, 24
Caroline Flitter, 25
Arthur Flitter, 4
Thomas Flitter, 11mths

I agree with trish1120 - wife Caroline was born in Gloucestershire and GRO birth index reveals Caroline's maiden name was Hicks i.e. Stephen Flaker and Caroline Hicks  Mar.qtr.1870 Northleach, Gloucestershire.   

Sounds like GRO mistranscribed his surname when they indexed it.

I have a feeling Caroline was illeg.

1861 she is born c 1849 Fyfield, a Servant in London.
1851 she is a Visitor with other Hicks in Eastleach Martin, Glous.

Many thanks Trish and Annette. Looks like that is the right Caroline, as I have just found Caroline Higgs? born Sept 1845 in Northleach reg district. Higgs could be a typo.
