May have been looking in the wrong place and wondered if someone could look up any records relating to: Leics regiment, 240130 John Hill. Trying to find out where he's from etc to see if he's who I'm looking for. Many thanks for anyone's help.

It appears that the only records that survive are his Silver War Badge record which has his enlistment 10 Dec 1912 and discharge 31 Dec 1917 dates and his medal record (1915 Star, Victory and British War medals). No detailed service record to be found.

It also gives his age on discharge as 24 years and 7 months, which would make him born 31 May 1893 (if it is correct).

Good spot Gardener.
Birth would be registered (assuming England/Wales) in Jun quarter 1863, FreeBMD has three locations for John (no middle name) Hill, might help?

And his medal card gives an older regimental number too: 1439

Long shot but he served overseas during the war with 5th Battalion Leicesters which was one of the pre war volunteer battalions. The battalion was the Oakham battalion so if he was with them in 1912 then perhaps he came from that area.
