There is a Smith Family on the 1901 Census living at 22 Regent Street, Ystradyfodwy, Pontypridd. Ann Smith Widow born 1860 Aberdare,  there is a son Thomas G Smith a Coal Hewer born 1882 but in Ystradyfodwy not New Tredegar. If this isn't the family you are looking for do you know when and where Ann was born?

It looks like Ann died soon after the 1891 census, in a rather nasty accident. They were living in Ruperra st in 1891

It's quite possible Thomas was in the Army in 1901 - quite a few young men of his age are missing from that census as they're fighting in the Boer War

Just a note that Thomas's wifes name was Mary Isabella Evans, born 1885 Abercarn.  That is the name she married under and the name on the 1911 census in Pontypridd:
Source Citation: Class: RG14; Piece: 32257; Schedule Number: 74

On the 1891 census there is a son called Neale - this is a very bad transcription and it is in fact a daughter called Kate, or more formally Catherine Smith.  Found Kate in 1901 working as a servant in New Tredegar, and still called Kate.

There is a Catherine Hammond nee Smith on the 1911 census in New Tredegar, believe that this is a Mary Catherine Smith born New Tredegar 1887.

Believe that Mary Isabella's parents were John Evans (born Rhymney 1854) and Ann Wilson (born Rhymney 1858) and she had a brother called Osbourne.  The family were in Pontypridd on the 1891 & 1901 census.  In 1901 Mary I Evans is a housemaid - the transcript says Mary J Evans (but the original is Mary I Evans) and she is shown as born Rhymney but I believe it is her.

sorry pressed the wrong button.
Thomas and Mary Isabella were my Grandparents ,I have obviously gone back to Thomas and Ann,I am trying to go back further but I do not know if I am on the right line.
1841 and 1851 census have John Smith 1816 born Ireland Elizabeth 1813 born Radnorshire and living in Bedwellty are these the Grandparents of Thomas senior, my mind is going ,I think there are 3 Thomas's before John .cath
