Title: St Peter Liverpool , multiple baptisms on same day.
Post by: wilcoxon on Monday 01 May 17 20:22 BST (UK)
Richard Smith was baptised 26 September 1859 at St Peter, Liverpool .
On the original image every baptism (16 in total ) is on the same day by the same official.
I`ve not been able to look at the pages either side.

 Why would that be  ?

There were 46 baptisms on that date and a lot on 27th.

Also, in the same vein, I've found that my family seemed to save up baptisms until they could do several on the same day. Some of the children could be 6 or 7 before they got baptised.

I'm not sure why they would do that, they weren't particularly poor. So probably not an economic thing.

For instance:

Baptism: 22 Feb 1797 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
John Sudlow - Son of Thomas Sudlow & Frances (formerly Mercer), his wife
    Born: 24 Jun 1794
    Abode: Harford street
    Occupation: Woollen draper
    Where Married: St. Paul's

As Heather says there are lots the day after and even more the day before. The minister changes - curate to main man but just looking through the records within September/October the numbers of baptisms are great. I wonder how it was organised!

If it's anything like the baptisms at St Marylebone in London, you turned up at the door on the day and joined the queue.

In 1816 the register went to 318 pages, 2540 baptisms inc 19 on Christmas Day.

And when they weren't baptising, they were burying in the churchyard.

This one has the words "Received by" after/ in place of " Baptised by". There may have been a prior baptism of Jessie, either private or another denomination.

Why not?  Even these days, at my church, when there are baptisms there are usually a number at once, like 3 or 4 or 6 - not 16 thank goodness.  As they are done after Mass these days, we'd all be sitting around for a long time  :P  :P  :P

It's several pages of 16 on one day and similar numbers on days before and after Dawn.
It must have been a quick splash or dip  :)

Some city parishes covered areas with thousands of people in them.

Statistically speaking, it would be more remarkable if there were more days with none or only a couple of baptisms on.
