Title: 1898 marriage Glossop Henry Haigh = Mary Ann Riddensdale
Post by: Lazarus on Monday 01 May 17 22:55 BST (UK)
I have the marriage certificate 10 Dec 1898 All Saints Glossop , Henry Haigh = Mary Ann Riddensdale.
Henry is the s/o Joseph Haigh and my Hannah Wyatt.
He is a widower so married previously.First wife may have been Maria???
I am trying to find details of first marriage and possible daughter Elizabeth Ann aged 14  at 1901 Census.
Henry was a stone mason. Both bride and groom living in Glossop at the time of marriage.

Help appreciated.

I can't see a death of a Maria Haigh between 1886 and 1898 apart from an 87 year old.

Have you found Henry in earlier censuses?

Hi - sorry, it is not clear whether you have found Elizabeth Ann aged 14 in 1901, or whether you are looking for her?  What was her birthplace?

There is a Henry Haigh with wife Maria in the 1891 census in Glossop, but no Elizabeth Ann with them. Was his second wife a widow, perhaps Elizabeth was her child as I can't see a birth for her under Haigh.

Yes - looks as if she was! So she must have taken Henry's name when her mother married him.

Henry Haigh, 21, and "Mariah", 22, were already together as husband and wife in Glossop in 1881.

I can't find a marriage or a death for Maria, can you avm228?

No, I can't find her marriage or death either.  I suppose if she wasn't lawfully married her death registration might just be in her maiden name.

Most of the Glossop-born Marias of the right sort of age in the 1871 census can be accounted for later.  Have not yet eliminated Maria Monks b 1857 to Joshua & Sarah, or Maria Ollerenshaw b 1859 to James & Mary.

Death registration, Jun qtr 1897

Maria Haigh indexed on FreeBMD as 87 - likely to be an error for 37

Hayfield 7b 455

As long as Henry's mother wasn't also Maria, that death looks good.

I wonder if the Mary Ann Hackney is his second wife who perhaps married again, age is about right?

Thank you groom. I believe the mother of Henry was Hannah ( Wyatt).
She married Joseph Haigh Oct 1843 Manchester Cathedral.Henry was the last born of seven children.
I am thinking Mary Ann Hackney , may have been Riddensdale/Haigh b1863 buried Haigh grave 1939.

Possible marriage ( other couple on page I have checked out)

Arthur Newton to Rebecca Riddensdale March qtr 1897 Hayfield 7b 1059

Rebeca Newton 62 address in UK 22, Wates? Street, Glossop, Liverpool to Boston 12th June 1931 on Vessel Laconia she was intending to stay in Boston.

It's surprising how far Glossop folk traveled to get wed  :) Plenty in Chapel-en-le-Frith in early days - just outside the Ancient Parish (one of the largest in the country) of course.
I've found a few couples marrying at Manchester Cathedral.
Mottram/Tintwistle is always worth looking at because many Hadfield families found it easier to get there than over the hill to (Old) Glossop. Indeed, the marriage I found the details for may well have been there because the information I quoted only relates to the registration district.

Thank you Graham
That is what I am starting to notice with my Wyatt family from Glossop.
Perhaps I should check Mottram/Tintwhistle as well as Chapel en le Frith.
Only today I was considering a couple of marriages at Audenshaw.
Thomas Wyatt ,one of my Wyatts from Blackshaw Farm married 25 Dec 1874 at St Stephen Audenshaw , Sarah Jane Stone. At the time of their marriage they were both living at Audenshaw but almost immediately sailed for Australia.

A Sarah Wyatt had also married Herbert Bradwell Sep 1876 at the same church.
Hannah Wyatt also from Glossop married Joseph Haigh Oct 1843 at Manchester Cathedral.
