Title: Rachel and Elizabeth Reid in York Township in 1800s
Post by: punch on Tuesday 02 May 17 17:26 BST (UK)
I do not know if this is the correct board to post this question. In my research of early settlers on Concession 4 east of Yonge Street I find 2 Samuel Martin families, one on Lot 4 and the other on Lot 2. Both Samuels are married to Reid women - one is Elizabeth Reid born about 1832 in Ireland and the other Rachel Reid born on September 11, 1827 in Ireland. My dilemma is that I am trying to determine whether the 2 Reid women are sisters and they married men with same given and last name. I have tried to find results in Familysearch and other internet sites and have been unsuccessful. Would you have any suggestions for me? Thank you in advance.

Good clue Sandra on the marriage license. John and Elizabeth Reid could quite possibly be brother and sister of Rachel.

There is an anc tree which says Rachel Reid (Martin) - 1827–1901
Born 11 September 1827 - Ireland and died 24 July 1901 - York Township, York, Ontario.

Not sure that the parents listed look correct but will quote them for you to see  ::)

Parents are listed as - John Hugh MARTIN - 1790–1861
Born 8 March 1790 - Monongalia Co,(W)VA and passed away 24 SEP 1861 - Farmington, Marion, Virginia   ??? ??? ???
Mother Nancy Elizabeth EVERLY - 1797–1845
Born 26 July 1797 - Monongalia Co,(W)VA passed away 26 July 1845 - Farmington, Marion, Virginia, USA  ??? ??? ???

Wow Sandra. Thank you so much for the information on the death of Elizabeth Reid Martin and the name of her parents. You have the right Rachel (Reid) Martin, but the parents listed are wrong because Rachel was born a Reid. I don't know how you do it, but you are always such a great help in uncovering information that I cannot.

Those parents - "stick out like a sore thumb" - one of those not to be relied on anc trees  ::)
Shame Rachel's death certificate didn't give parents info  :'(

Elizabeth and Rachel may have had several siblings.  I've not yet determined if the following is all connected, so my apologies if this ends up being a wild goose chase.   ;)

1861 York Census
Saml Reed, age 63, Carter
Sarah, age 59
Tho, age 18
Mary, age 23
All born in Ireland
Living with them were two other people; I can't make out their names.
Could this be Elizabeth's and Rachel's family?
Note:  the image on the next page has James Reed (Labourer, age 39) and his family.  Perhaps James was Samuel's son?

1860 Caverhill's Toronto City Directory
Samuel Reid, carter, 141 Elizabeth st.
J Reid, 145 Elizabeth st

1865 Mitchell's Toronto City Directory
Samuel Reid, h 141 Elizabeth
John Reid, shoemaker, 35 Scott, h 141 Elizabeth
Wm. Reid, shoemaker, 35 Scoutt, h 141 Elizabeth

Ontario Deaths
William Reid, age 82, died 20 June 1919.  Buried St. James
Born:  Ireland.  Occupation:  Custom Offices House
Father's name: Samuel Reid
Mother's name: Sarah Lacker

I also found a newspaper article, from Newmarket Ontario 19 January 1855.  It stated that a Samuel Reid "a Carter residing on Centre Street" was killed following a struggle.
The link can be found using the following terms
"samuel reid" 1855 newmarket ontario
I don't know if it is a trusted site, so I didn't add it here.   ;)

A Thomas Reid, parents Samuel and Sarah Jane Reid married in 1883.  There is more about this man, if you are interested in trying to piece the Reid family together.

Again, my apologies if none of the above are for your Reid ladies.

Hi Lisa,
First let me apologize for not responding to your posts before today. I only came across them today. The information you provided is excellent and I feel that it is quite possible that this family  is connected to my Elizabeth and Rachel family. Sarah, the mother's last name has several different spellings which makes it difficult, but I plan on persevering. Does the newspaper article from Newmarket give any pertinent information such as names, etc.? Again thank you so much for spending your time looking up the information you provided. It is very much appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

The newspaper article does not mention any names, etc.  This is the link I found:

Perhaps there could be another write-up about the event in latter issues of the newspaper, which could provide clues for you?   :-\
