Can anyone help me locate an ancestor in the 1861 Census? I can't find him anywhere. Here are the details I do have...
Born 1800+or-5yrs in Leith, Midlothian.
Occupation: Joiner
Married Grace Portman 1824 South Leith
Had 11 Children from 1826-1851
1841 Living with wife and 6 children, Tolbooth Wynd. (Age appears to be wrong)
1851 Living with wife and 8 children, 6 Piccadilly street, Lanarkshire (name is mistranscribed Laisy)
1858 Wife Dies *EDIT* in Teviot Street Glasgow
1871 Living with son James, 19 Bolton Street Lanarkshire.
Thanks for looking

Where did William's wife die & who was the informant?
As SP index is free it may be worth checking that as there are less likely the mistranscriptions although variants need to be considered i.e. Lang.

Have you found James in 1861?
And checked out his other children to see if they had him living with them :)

Hi Annie, Williams wife (Grace Portman) died in the Anderston District of Glasgow, William himself is the informant :)

Hi Milliepede, I have searched for James and his other children but so far haven't found anything conclusive

I presume, since none of these addresses contain the name of the town or city, that you are using one of the transcriptions that didn't think it necessary to include this rather basic piece of detail from the census.
I strongly recommend viewing the originals at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to make sure that the rest of the transcription is correct in each case. The name is transcribed as Laing in FreeCEN and indexed as Laing on SP, not as Laisy or any other creative mistranscription.
As for his age in 1841, FreeCEN and SP both have it as 40. If he was 51 in 1851, this means that he was born in 1799 or 1800. Adults' ages in 1841 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so if 51 is correct in 1851, 40 is correct in 1841.
