as it happens, my stepmother's sister was married to William MacLellan.. Uncle Will had a travelling shop around the area and later they operated from Chestnut Cottage in Eaglesfield. Are yours all Mc's or Mac's ?

Hi Pete..they are McLellans. My great grandfather was James and he died in the first war. The family did live in Eaglesfield but Isabella's husband Alexander was illegitimate and his mother never married so as far as I know there were no siblings but James had 4 brothers and two sisters....
What were Williams parents called?

Hi Karen....I've found the headstone of Isabella and their son. Couldn't locate the others in the old or new cemeteries. There are a number of headstones lying face down in the old section and a lot missing or never erected. Have you got any rough dates for the others? They may be in the Kirk yard or Springkell, Pennersaughs or even Carruthers. Pete

yes please Karen. I can send you some photos by return.  Not sure when Middlebie Cemetery was opened....maybe someone on here has that information.
I'm in Gretna but work in Annan...our family used to be in Eaglesfield. In fact my great grandfather made and lettered Isabella's headstone.
If I'm near Middlebie kirk yard I'll have a look in there. Pete.

Pete...are you still working out at Middlebie Cemetery....if yes could I ask if you could look for any headstones with McCracken on. My 3rd great grandfather Thomas and his wife Margaret Chalmers are buried there too....about 1919...don't worry if you have finished your work there....may get up there myself hopefully
Just looking through my tree again and my great grandfather James McLellan was a masons apprentice in Eaglesfield in 1901.aged 16 .....perhaps he worked with your great grandfather
Many thanks
Karen

Hi Karen...had another look in Middlebie today when I was pricing a job.....found this...in loving memory of Thomas McCracken who died at Eaglesfield 15 October 1919 aged 91 years. Margaret Chalmers his wife who died there 7 January 1900 aged 74. David McCracken their grandson and beloved husband of Beatrice Houghton who died at London 12 December 1935 aged 54 years.
Hope that helps?
Pete.
