Hi. I have a baptism record for an Anne O'Brien. No father is listed and the mother is listed as Ellen O'Brien with the 'formerly' crossed out. Now, does this mean Anne is illegitimate, or could it be possible that the parents were married but the father was away for some reason and was unable to attend the baptism? Thank you. Julie.

I'd go with Illegitimate, if the father was away (not that that would be a reason to leave his name off I think) than the mother would still have a formally name.

Father away or not, he would be mentioned and with formally crossed out, it suggests the mother was never married so had no 'former' maiden name. May be worth searching in the same parish to see if you can find mothers baptism record plus any other children( siblings of Anne) naming the mother

Is it a baptism or a birth cert.
I don't think I've ever seen a baptism with formally on it, but it is used on birth certs.
If it's birth cert the baptism would be worth finding to see if the priest wrote any think.

Ha! I was just about to post that myself :D So, it appears definite that Anne is illegitimate. Now to try and hunt down any workhouse records.

Unfortunately both her birth cert and baptism only give the workhouse as the address, Ellen probably went to the workhouse hospital to give birth, she may be from Mullingar but she could also be from outside the town.
