Title: Victoria Place, Milngavie in 1925
Post by: AsH62 on Thursday 11 May 17 14:37 BST (UK)
Hi. Please can I have some local knowledge to help me find out about Victoria Place, Milngavie in 1925.
My grandparents Margaret Masterton and Douglas Hepburn got married in Milngavie in 1925 and my grandmother gave her address as Victoria Place Milngavie.
At first I thought that Granny was living with her parents at this address (my grandfather was living with his at Barloch Farm, Milngavie) but her mum and dad were living in Glasgow so this must have been where granny was working. Both Margaret and Douglas gave their occupations as 'shop keeper' but I can't find out anything about what property/properties comprised Victoria Place.

I am even struggling with the valuation rolls because Milngavie is in East Dunbartonshire but  the closest I have got in the valuation rolls is Victoria Place in Clydedbank, Old Kilpatrick on the Glasgow Road, is this the same/right place?
As you can see I am getting no where fast and would love someone to put me right!

Thanks
Alison

I can't help with Victoria Place, but I wonder if this is anywhere near Barloch Farm?

Added: There is a Victoria Place in Milngavie today, but it doesn't appear to have been there on earlier maps so I don't know when it appeared:

(it's in the centre of the modern map on the right)

A photo of Victoria Place here www.edlcimages.co.uk/archive/categories/streets-10/view/1030/

Not clear what year it was taken.

Re the VRs, I seeing the same as you unfortunately. The 1901 Census is showing Victoria Place in Milngavie in New Kilpatrick.

Thank you Ruskie and Monica. I haven't come across the maps where you can compare- that's brilliant and another tool to use.
The photo looks as if it is about the right time frame looking at the clothing and I can make out the name of the shop so finally I have a surname for my research, this is great, thank you.
My grandmother's family were grocers so suddenly things are looking hopeful.
Thank you for taking the time to help!

I lived in Milngavie 25+ years ago and that looks like Douglas Street to me

I take it back. Victoria Place was just to the north of present day Victoria Place, on the corner of Glasgow Road and Station Road.

Lots of references and photos here   (http://www.europese-bibliotheek.nl/en/Books/Milngavie_in_old_picture_postcards_volume_1/100-136330/Article/2)
