Title: Edwin Paddington
Post by: Gemski23 on Wednesday 17 May 17 22:32 BST (UK)
Hi I am struggling to know where to start, my husband's father passed away about 12 years ago and his mum really doesn't want to be involved so he knows only his fathers first name Edwin and Surname Paddington born 10/04/1956 to parents Edwin and Hillary in Dumfries we think. Any places/advice on where to start ideally free just to get going so he can have an idea on where he comes from and the family tree. Thanks

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

There is a 'no living persons' policy so please don't post names of people who are still living.
Did your father die in 2004?

I can see a death registration for an Edwin George Paddington born 10th April 1956
Death 2004, Eastbourne, Sussex

If you reply to this post a couple of times, you will be able to send and receive personal messages.

Scotland's People reveals a birth registration for an Edwin G PADDINGTON in 1956 Ref is 821/769, registration district is Dumfries.

So far not coming up with a marriage for the parents on Scotland's People.  Is the ancestry Scottish?

Hi Thanks for the info I read the 'no living persons' post so thought it would be ok to post about his dad. Husband thinks he did die somewhere down south, so Eastbourne sounds likely and agin 2004 sounds about right. With regards to parents marriage I am assuming Scottish as his dad was born in Dumfries and that's the birth record I found but nothing more. Thanks again

I know you are trying to do as much as you can free, but I would recommend obtaining the birth certificate for Edwin.  It will give you his mother's maiden name which would help when looking for a marriage and his father's occupation may well be of assistance.

Any address on there could be checked on the electoral registers to see how long they were at that address.

You may well have to spend some money on certificates in order to gain more information.

Thanks Girl Guide if there is useful info on the birth certificate then happy to start there and work onwards. Great night though found out Eds parents were married in Horsham and in 1968. Not sure if still alive so won't post her maiden name just in case but thank you for your help!

The Horsham marriage certainly looks like it may be the one you want.  Getting the birth cert would verify the maiden name then you can start to go backwards from there.

There is certainly a Paddington family in Horsham in the 1939 register.  I can't give details as we are not allowed to do that.

As far as I can see there appears to be only the one Paddington family in Horsham.

I'm a little confused in that you say Edwin G. Paddington was born 1956 in Dumfries but then say his parents were an Edwin G. and Hillary who didn't marry until 1968 in Horsham??   Was he born before his parents married?

There are 5 marriages listed for Edwin G Paddington between 1954-2002.  2 were in Surrey and 3 in Sussex

The only English birth is 1933 Horsham and he is the one who died in 2004

His mmn was Slough

In view of the inconsistency between the birth year of 1956 and the marriage year of 1968, I would definitely obtain the 1956 birth certificate to see who the parents are.

The mother may turn out to be someone different to whom you are expecting.  Until you have that birth certificate, any other information found is speculation.

I find it a little odd that the birth is in Scotland and yet everything else appears to be in England.

Thanks all I am going to try and get his birth certificate so hopefully we know the maiden name as although it seems probable that they married in Horsham as that's the next village to where my husbands mum comes from it does seem strange that his dad was born in Dumfries.... thanks for all your help so far.

The below tells you how to order a certificate

https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/how-to-order-an-official-extract-from-the-registers

Cost is £12.

The Scotland's People website

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

You will probably have to register before you can order the cert.  Just put his name in the search field, put 1954 to 1957 and it will come up with just one birth.  Then carry on from there.
