Title: Help finding William Wilson in 1871 Census
Post by: BridgetM on Wednesday 17 May 17 23:17 BST (UK)
I'm researching William Wilson, born 1866, St Saviour, Surrey, and am having trouble finding him in 1871.

In 1901 he's living with his wife on Castle Street in Portchester.  He's a seaman in the Royal Navy.
In 1911 he's still with his wife on Castle Street in Portchester.  He's a Navy Pensioner and a Grocer.

I think in 1881 he's on the Training Ship, Exmouth, and is a Pauper.

His naval records show that he was born 29 August 1866 St Saviour.  In 1891 he was on board HMS Collingwood, which was somewhere in the Mediterranean.

His marriage certificate gives his father's name as William and his father's occupation is Blacksmith. (I'm not convinced this information is accurate.)

I'd appreciate any help and advice.

He gives his birthplace as St Saviour in all the censuses except one.  In 1901 it's Borough, London.

It is my William Wilson in 1881.  Thanks Mirl for telling me about the Training Ship records on Ancestry. (The information on his first 2 ships was the same as the information on his naval records.)

(The TS records give his birth date as about 1866.  I have doubts about the August birth date he gives on his naval records.)

I have a William Wilson born June 1866 St Marylebone Workhouse and Infirmary.  His mother Jane gives her address as 18 Robert Street, O'st.  Does anyone know what O'st is an abbreviation for?

According to this link about old London street names there was a Robert Street, Ogilby Street in Woolwich.

There is a birth on freeBMD of William Wilson Sep qtr 1866 Greenwich Vol 1d p729.  Woolwich was in this district until 1868.
