I am looking for info for John Roderick Mckenzie. He emigrated and married in Quebec Canada 1878 and died in Montana USA 1931. His death certificate shows his birth as June 1851 Back Stornoway Scotland, and parents as Roderick & Margaret Mckenzie of Scotland. Anything on John's birth or his parents in Scotland would be helpful.

I have just found a link for a Roderick, born 1815 & Margaret Mckenzie? on the Stornoway Ross & Cromarty 1861 census. Any help to confirm would be helpful

Gotta love all these Roderick Mackenzies. I think everyone has at least one in their tree!
Fortunately my ancestral Roderick MacKenzie died in London so he is easier to pick out but I'm still not sure exactly were he was from.
For a few credits on Scotland people these are the Catherine MacKenzies whose births were registered at Stornoway between 1857 and 1860, one of whom is potentially the two year old on the 1861 census.

I think from the info. from Carole on 1851 & 1861 it's probably the correct person but a look at the 1871 & then has he disappeared on the 1881 would confirm that possibility?

I can see a likely family in 1871 at Back but John isn't with them.
Roderick MacKenzie Head Married Male 60
Mary MacKenzie Wife Married Female 55
Murdo MacKenzie Son Unmarried Male 30
Marion MacKenzie Daughter Unmarried Female 24
Christiana MacKenzie Daughter Unmarried Female 16
Annie MacKenzie Mother Widow Female 23 (transcription error with her age?)
Catherine MacKenzie - - Female 10
Mary MacKenzie Daughter - Female 7
Does his marriage record in Quebec include the name of his mother?
At Gress Farm?
John MacKenzie Servant Unmarried Male 19 1852 Farm Labourer

Unfortunately his 4 December 1878 Sherbrooke Quebec marriage record does not include parent details. His death certificate shows parents as Roderick & Margeret from Scotland. So I can see the problem with Mary/Margaret on the census details?
-
Does the 1851 census definitely say 9 months for John. Becouse his death certificate gives birth as June 1851.

I wouldn't be surprised if your John's sister is the Marion who married George Graham in 1879. They're living with her parents in 1881.
I think the identity of your John's parents is solvable and the records you need are in the Statutory records at ScotlandsPeople. The births of the Catherines I listed should find a likely couple.
There are three Mary MacKenzies registered in 1862 to 1865 in Stornoway (all 3 were registered in 1862) and a Mary Ann in 1863 (I think she is unlikely if she has a sister called Marion). I'd start with the Marys as there are fewer . Hopefully one of them is the daughter of Roderick and Mary/Margaret. Then to confirm I would gte the marriage of Marion McKenzie to George Graham in 1879. If her parents are Roderick and Mary/Margaret (with Mary/Margaret having the same maiden name as in Catherine's record) then it is likely you have the correct couple.
Do you have an image rather than a transcription of John's marriage in Quebec?
CaroleW is probably looking at a transcription of the 1851 census. The actual images can be viewed at ScotlandsPeople.

Yes - only transcripts are available unless you download the full image from SP. Always possible he was 9 days old but transcribed as 9 months

There is a birth record for Murdo (possibly John's brother) McKenzie on Anc, birth Sept 1841, baptism Nov 1842 Stornoway with parents Roderick Mckenzie & Mary Maciver which does seem to link with the family on the 1861 but mother Margaret?

A Malcolm McIver appears on 1878 marriage of John Mckenzie and Mary Smith ???

Hmm,
A couple of thoughts ???
Could Mary on the census actually be Marg?
1861 clearly says Margaret but the rest have Mary?
I think you need the original for 1871 probably?

I've working on Granny, who will not be 23!
Marriages recorded on ScotlandsPeople in Stornoway from 1800 to 1816 where an Anne married a MacKenzie are:
MACKENZIE JAMES ANNE MACLEOD. 20/12/1810
John MacKenzie & Ann McLean. 29/11/1816
William MacKenzie & Annabella McIver. 14/12/1807
Isabella MacKenzie, aged 13 and born in Back is a visitor with an Ann McLeod aged 60 in 1861. They're at Coll Rd, Stornoway. It says Ann is unmarried but perhaps she meant widowed? It says Ann was born at Portrola.

Many thanks to all. I'm sure I have the right John Roderick Mckenzie and family.
