Trying to locate more information on my 9th-g-grandmother Sarah BURGES' family. Her father was Jacob (not James as is often found in trees) BURGES, as proven by his will.
Jacob died in 1590 and his will calls William MERRIAM (1564-1635) his son-in-law. He also names other sons-in-law but I haven't researched other daughters.
Would very much appreciate from anyone with BURGES or BURGESS in the 1500s on in the Goudhurst and Tudley, Kent, areas.

The Kent Feet of Fines for Phillip & Mary mentions a Rob BURGES who sold land in Goudhurst & Lenham.

Hi, I'm a Burges(s) descendant and did not know that Sarah's father was Jacob as opposed to James. You mentioned the will of Jacob, do you have a copy or can you point me to one?

Sdbadger, I saw your message offering a copy of the will, thanks! My messaging function seems to be broken right now, I don't have the ability to reply and one message made my inbox 100% full. I've got a request in to the support team to check this out.
Meanwhile I actually found a copy of the will on ancestry.com and tried to upload it to this thread last night but now I don't see any sign of those files so maybe it's a related problem on my account.

Back to the Burges thread, an ancestry.com member posted that the Daniel Piper mentioned as son-in-law in the will of Jacob Burges had married Jacob's daughter Margaret but offered no source citations and then seems to have deleted that post on the forum.
Modifying prior post: Merriam Genealogy in England & America includes the 1616 Tonbridge will of Robert Piper/Pyper, clothier. He has a wife Margaret, brother Daniel Piper (likely the one above) and "brother in law" William Merriam so one possibility is that Robert married William's sister Margaret Merriam. However, the will also lists the deceased grandsire of (at least) his 3 eldest daughters, John Hablett. That implies his wife is Margaret Hablett, not Margaret Merriam. Or else he had a prior wife, or Margaret had a prior husband Hablett who gave her 3 children.
No luck yet on finding any supporting records.

I had not seen that, thank you for pointing it out. Fortunately the Merriam family in particular is pretty well researched, I've got what seems to be the two main sources "Ancestry of Franklin Merriam Peabody" here

Lots of original Latin wills, too bad our public school system did not include Latin ;)

Jacob's will states both Daniel and Robert PIPER are his sons-in-law. I haven't named the sisters of Sara in my tree. Will get on that ASAP!

Maybe I can help a bit, I have Sarah with 2, possibly 3 surviving sisters, Margaret baptized 31 Aug 1561 in Cranbrook, Agnes baptized 19 Apr 1568 (there was an earlier 1563 Agnes who I was guessing had died before the 1568 use of the name but I don't have a specific parish record for a death). The 3rd is questionable, a Mary Burges baptized 26 Feb 1570/71 but the handwriting is hard to read.. The only other sibling I had was brother William baptized 24 Jan 1566/67 and buried 25 Jan same year. Sources for the above are FHL film 1736631 Item 2 Archdeacon's transcripts, 1560-1812; Bishop's transcripts, 1611-1917. I have images of all these if you would like me to email them to you but I'm not sure the familysearch T&Cs would allow public posting.
I've got Margaret married to Daniel Piper based on Jacob Burges' will, but I don't have a parish register for that either and I've got no spouse at all for Agnes but presumably she was the one who married Robert Piper? Unless I've got them backwards, the will names them both but doesn't seem to say who married whom.

Just updated my prior post with a 3rd questionable daughter and offer to email images, not sure if that update would be picked up.
Oh and one other thing you might know already, his will lists wife Alice so that's another good data point. Unsure if she was also the mother of his children.
