Can anyone help me unravel why Joseph lea aged 19 and Mary Rice Lea were baptized in Toxteth park in 1885 address given as 21 Hodges Mount
Father Thomas LEA ( b 1822 )was a printer manager
Other evidence of this family is mostly in Cheshire .according to 1861 census father Thomas was born in Liverpool
Mother Elizabeth b1827 .and children
James Henry Lea b 1854
Thomas Mason lea b1850
Margaret Jane lea b1854
frank Lea b1860
were born in Bebington Cheshire
Although John Frederick was b .1857 in Liverpool
Birkenhead 1871 census has Elizabeth Ellen b1861 .Joseph b1865 and Mary Rice Lea b 1869
All born in Birkenhead
In 1881. Married sister Margaret Jane Westthrope was living at Toxteth park
But I can't see any other links ...
Also help finding deaths of any of the Lea family would be greatly appreciated .
James Henry Lea died in 1899
And Margaret Jane Westthrope must have died between 1891 census and
1900 when younger sister Elizabeth Ellen marrying her widowed husband
Their wedding banns do not show her father Thomas Lea as deceased but I haven't found him or Elizabeth in 1881 1891 or 1900

There is a census with a ,Mary R lea aged 11 as step daughter
The head of household is a printer but I can't read his name
Wife seems to be Maria
This could be same family
I can't read the names to make a match
-
Awful writing
1881 3636 /12/17
Tho. Lea 61 yrs
Mary Lea 50 yrs
Wm. H. Lea 21 yrs
Frank Lea 21 yrs
Jos. Lea 15 yrs
Mary R. Lea 11 yrs stepdaughter
There is a marriage in 1881 for Thomas Lea and Maria Westhorpe
-
That's very interesting if not a little incestuous ?
Marie Westthrope is the mother of Sam Burton Westthrope who married Margaret Jane lea in 1877
And Elizabeth Ellen in 1877
-
Here is Mary Westhorp in 1871 3752/78/4 in Birkenhead
Mary Westhorp 39 yrs
Samuel B 15 yrs
William H 10 yrs
Mary is a widow - no real relationship though is it - her son married - then she married the father. Is that it?
-
I.ve been trying to make the names fit
Frank Joe and Mary R correspond in ages
But where does Wm H come I
Could it be JmH for James Henry ? He was born 1854 tho
Daniel Lea is nearer in age b1859
John Frederick b1857 can be ruled out as he was a married baker by then
-
Maria Lea aged 59 is living with her son William Hast Westthrop in 1891
Both are widowed
-
Why is Mary R listed as Step daughter but William H is son in 1881 - perhaps just an error.
-
I wondered that ...
So Wm H is Maria.s son surname Westthrope
And Mary R lea is her stepdaughter .!
Age 21 Mary is living with Samuel B and Margaret Jane Westthrope in Wales she is listed as wife.s sister
I did wonder if she was actually the child of one of the elder siblings ...I wonder where that middle name Rice came from
-
Marriage bans for Thomas lea and Maria Westthrope nee Kendal are actually 1877
Hang on it may have been a double wedding with their children address 48 Holden St looks familiar
Sam and Margaret married on 8th Oct 1877 in West Derby
When did Thomases first wife Elizabeth die ?
-
I can't read the month on the parents banns but it's the 2nd and not the same church
But I now have a name and proffession for Thomas's father .James ..flour dealer links nicely with 2 of his grandsons becoming baker's
-
You're right - it was. 2nd December 1877 - I don't know where I got 1881 from!

Death of Margaret Jane Westhorp
March 1899
Newport 11a 12
Year of birth is a bit out at abt 1857 instead of 1853
Wales fits with 1891 census so possible
Not what you asked for but as you have Thomas Lea born 1822
Does that mean you don’t have his baptism?
Son of James Lea & Mary Rice ?
Can provide details if the one
-

Thanks comberton and Heyworth
I.ll call it a day for now
The 1881 census does explain that the family were in Toxteth that decade but not why those 2 children didn't get baptized til their teens the only other sibling I found a baptism for was frank lea born and baptised in 1860 Bebington
-
I almost missed the bit about Thomas baptism ....that explains the Rice name too
I do like it when things tie up ....
I wonder why 1861 census had mary lea as ' visitor ' flour dealer if she was actually his mother
-

possibly after Thomas married Maria Westhorp (nee Kendal) she insisted that the unbaptised childen were baptised possibly before confirmation
-
Oh just realised mothers maiden name
I was confused because I thought Thomas's wife was Elizabeth Rice !
-
That's a good guess Ann ..
.and the children who were already adults by 1877
would have carried on unbaptised so I must stop wasting hours looking for their baptisms
