The North Shields Fishermen's Heritage Project (NSFHP) have been fundraising in order to have a lasting memorial created to honour the memory of lost fishermen. They have now reached the £75,000 target. (The last £2,000 was donated by the publicans of the Low Lights Tavern, Brewer's Bank, North Shields. This is the oldest pub in North Shields and the only surviving proper fishermen's pub left.)
There will be an official ceremony during which the memorial will be revealed to the public. The ceremony will take place on the foreshore at Clifford's Fort, North Shields on Sunday, 24 September 2017 between 11.30 am and 1 pm.

Looking forward to seeing some photos.
Here is a memorial to mariners of Brixham, recently unveiled.

Really like the title of the memorial! A great piece of fundraising. Lest we forget.

Thank you Radcliff, mowsehouse and seaweed for your responses and feedback on this post. Not long now to the big day of unveiling. :)
That is a fabulous looking memorial at Brixham! Thank you for sharing this photo mowsehouse. :)

River Tyne Lass, I am relieved to know my photo of the Brixham statue to honour mariners lost at sea has been well received.
Entitled "Man and Boy" by Elizabeth Hadley, it was placed close to the RNLI station and unveiled late in 2016.

The itinerary for the event has now come out. Please see attached. :)

Exciting.
Wish I could come.

Lots of interesting information on their website http://www.nsfhp.org.uk/
Lets hope the weather for the unveiling is as lovely as it is today (well, it is lovely a bit inland, so hope it's the same on the coast) http://www.nsfhp.org.uk/event/fiddlers-green-day/

Glad you like 👍 this mowsehowse! Here is a slightly longer distance photo. I noticed that the memorial is attracting a steady stream of visitors :)
-
It is tremendous. I assume he is visible from sea?
The Brixham memorial is not much above life size, (I think,) and for me it is more about private moments of reflection than your large mariner who must arrest the eye from quite a distance.

Hi mowsehowse,
Yes, I think by the size, this memorial will be visible from the sea. As the Memorial is floodlit at night I would imagine that those entering or leaving the Tyne during the night will have a good view too.
Can you see the small glass in the photo? Apparently, on Sunday someone left a small dram of whiskey in memory of a loved one lost at sea.
Thank you for your posts. :)

A "shot glass"?
Nice idea but it looks like someone else couldn't resist! :-X
