Hello
I'm trying to find the children of a Thomas and Sarah GOODEN/GOODIN baptised around Lowesby please. I am also interested in the father's occupation please
Two are on FamilySearch - Henry bap 1830 and George bap 1828
Published Trees have the couple as Thomas and Sarah Ann BATES and a number of children. Anything else related to this couple would be most helpful
Many thanks

Hello all
Sorry I've taken so long to get back - have been out a few hours.
Thank you so much for all your help. I was hoping to see that Thomas was a shepherd so looks like I am on the right track. This has been quite a brick wall for me.
Many, many thanks

Sorry... and the Catherine Sidwell / Goodin/Goodwin marriage please. It should be George Goodin and Catherine Sidwell I believe
Lots of trees have George Goodin renamed as George Henry Goodin and making his way to Australia in the early 1850s and I don't think that that is him.
-
Hi enzfan
I think just a typo in willsy's post #17 - the groom is George Goodwin.
Apologies willsy didn't want to but in :)

Hello all
Thanks for that - now I am confused - George Goodwin/Goodin can't be a bachelor twice I'm thinking - so which one is my man?
Another mystery to solve!
Thanks so much for all of the information provided. I have made so much progress.
Very much appreciated ;D
-
Came across this baptism by chance at St Margaret's
GOODIN SARAH ANNE HAWLEY & SARAH 1847 04-Apr
I've had a look and they live in Northampton Street, father's occ sawyer, birth 9 May 1839.
Has also been transcribed as Hawkey and gives you another headache as I am not too sure of a birth.
Do you have Sarah snr after 1851?
-
No I can't find what happened to Sarah senior (nee Bates) after 1851 >:(
Sorry don't know who this new Sarah Anne is either.
I've tracked all the male siblings except one whom I have assume died before 1841. Most of the children were born in Cold Newton except the first child, a girl who was born in Medbourne and a couple of others who were born in Tilton. Place of birth is inclined to be inconsistent on the census records
Sarah senior was born in Medbourne

Possible Death Regs Gro Index;

Other 2 in 1854 are age 25 and 80
1863 age 63**** another possible
1857 is age 1
Dec 1861 age 1

I didn't find anything at Welford Road that seemed right so the Oakham one looks interesting
-
Thanks very much for that :)

George Goodwin/Goodin can't be a bachelor twice I'm thinking - so which one is my man?
If the second marriage was bigamous he could....
I can't see a death for Eliza but there is a marriage in Leicester in 1853 between an Eliza Newman & Joseph Wilson or John Wood that might be worth checking out :-\
George & Catherine Goodin had a son in Leicester in 1852, baptised 5 Dec as John Henry but registered as just Henry:
GOODIN, HENRY MMN: SIDWELL. GRO Ref: 1852 D Quarter in LEICESTER Vol 7a, Page 148
By 1861 the family had moved to Oldbury, Worcestershire - RG9/2022/89/33 - and by 1881 are in Rowley Regis and have an 8 year-old granddaughter with them named Mercy - RG11/2858/86/3
GOODWIN, MERCY (MMN Blank) GRO Ref: 1873 S Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 06C Page 5
George variously gives his PoB as Leicester or Rutland and in 1891 is enumerated as Gooding.
-
Yes the Mercy grandchild is the reason why I am wondering if this is my man.
Although he was born in Cold Newton the fact that the place of birth in 1861 is Wixon (which I suspect should say Wigston), connects to the family as well). Place of birth is terribly inconsistent with this man. Very frustrating!
-
It looks like George & Catherine also had a daughter named Mercy who died as an infant:
GOODIN, MERCY MMN: SIDWELL 1863 M Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 6b Page 663
GOODWIN, MERCY Age 1 1864 S Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 6b Page 392
If I have the right person then George's brother, Henry, also named a child Mercy a
and was living in the same area as George:
1851, Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove - HO107/2047/37/5
Henry Goodwin 21 Visitor, Sawyer b Sutton? Leics
12 Apr 1852, Bromsgrove, Henry Goodin & Sarah Watton
GOODIN, MERCY MMN: WATTON 1856 M Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 6b Page 580
-
Yes - Henry and the George I'm trying to sort out had a sister named Mercy and Henry did name a daughter Mercy which is why I'm wondering about the second George being the same as the first (does that make sense? because of the granddaughter being named Mercy
