Title: Mcilwaine of Monaghan
Post by: barbara13511 on Saturday 27 May 17 18:10 BST (UK)
I have McIlwain/McElwain from the above area who all moved to Scotland and then on to England.  Charles born 1832, Francis around 1835, William 1837 and Richard 1846 .

3 of them give their birth place.  Charles says Clontibret, Wm - Mucion? and Richard Castleblayney.

Would Mucion sound like the gaelic for Monaghan?

Boys all born to Robert Mcilwain and Jane Mills.  Anybody know of any other children to this couple and if there are any baptisms?

Thank you
Barbara

Thanks for reply.
Don't think they were catholic unfortunately.  At least they weren't when they came to Scotland.

In order to find church records you'll need to have an idea of religion. However, not all records survive and of those that do not all are online.

Clontibret (both the name of a townland and its parish) and Castleblayney (in Muckno parish) aren't that far apart.

When the brothers married in Scotland they married in the church of Scotland so Presbyterian but that could have been their brides' religion. What site is best to search.  I don't mind trawling.

If they weren't Catholic then the possibilities are Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist...

There is no one site that has all church records. This site lists information on church records,etc.-

Some Monaghan records here- http://monaghan.rootsireland.ie/

Also check church records under Monaghan Resources at top of Monaghan board.

Thank you

I would be more inclined to say Muckno rather than Monaghan

LDS have extracted the marriage record for Hannah Mcilwaine (father John, etc.) to John Donaldson-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGCN-1JL

Daughter Sarah Jane born 1865- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRHP-YH4
Son James born 1867- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5VL-9JR
Daughter Margaret born 1872- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGHD-Z3T

The actual birth certificates should be available on Irish Genealogy site (free) but registration only started in 1864 so there are likely older children also

Thanks but these are too late as the eldest were in Glasgow by 1851. I have not managed to find Richard who would be 6 nor Charles in 1851. Robert their father is widowed by then

*non-Roman Catholic Marriages are recorded from 1845, Roman Catholic Marriages are recorded from 1864

Do you mean that their father Robert also went to Scotland?
