Title: Looking for Dyer's from Legatinty Co Roscommon
Post by: Tammy Siobhán Meaney on Monday 29 May 17 22:08 BST (UK)
Hi Guys.
I have found someone who I think is my great grandfather. A James Dyer born in Legatinty on 06/06/1879. I am fairly sure I have found the same person passing away around 66 years later on 11/01/1944 in Ballinasloe Mental Hospital.

Was wondering if there was anyone out there perhaps related to the family that could help piece some things together or even give me an idea of where I might get any records for the hospital?

Thanks
Tammy

Medical records are sealed for 100 years so any record of his admittance and stay in the hospital will not be easily accessible for a while

Under the FOI act you maybe able to apply for his records through the HSE if they exist

James DYER died of myocarditis LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1944/04647/4235502.pdf)
This is not a condition that would suggest he was admitted for as it is a heart condition

This is a LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1903/10227/5722425.pdf) to their marriage record
noting Margaret's name is spelt CARRIE and that she signed her name CAREY!

James DYER's father was named John

edited to add
LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002366982/) to Margaret DYER on 1911 census
The four children were: LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-perform-search.jsp?namefm=&namel=dyer&ddBfrom=&mmBfrom=&yyBfrom=1904&ddBto=&mmBto=&yyBto=1920&locationB=&keywordb=carry&ddMfrom=&mmMfrom=&yyMfrom=&ddMto=&mmMto=&yyMto=&locationM=&keywordm=&ddDfrom=&mmDfrom=&yyDfrom=&ddDto=&mmDto=&yyDto=&locationD=&keywordd=&submit=Search)
Dec 16 1903 John Christopher b. Eden, Co. Offaly
May 05 1906 Mary Elizabeth b. The Knock, Roscrea
May 29 1909 Maggie b. The Heath, Roscrea
Jul 02 1910 William b. The Heath, Roscrea; he died Sept 29 1911

I think that this is James and son John in 1911 - shown as DWYER LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Ettagh/Heath/556724/)
at 3 in Heath (Ettagh, King's Co.) the address of three of the births

This may be the death of Margaret DYER in 1922 aged 40 LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1922/05068/4389476.pdf)
She is described as a "wife" implying her husband was still alive

I cant find any birth/death records for him. Although on the census link that you sent me that does look like that would have been him.

He's not the same Dyer though that died on 11.01.1944 in Ballinasloe though is he?

I presume that this is the daughter Margaret LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1939/08860/5204108.pdf)
She married in 1939 and her father is not shown as deceased at that time, however not all registrar's noted this
What it does show is that the family was still in the area in 1939

I'm pretty convinced that the 1911 census return is correct in light of the son John being the correct age; the number of years married being correct and the visitor's name being CAREY a variation of his wife's surname

When you look at the 1911 census for Margaret with her family she has a brother Henry
He was born on Jun 10 1897 LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1897/02124/1807281.pdf); his mother's name being FARRELL
This is her sister Ellen CARRY b. Nov 20 1892 LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1892/02325/1870574.pdf) which is about 17 in 1911

He cannot be the man who died in 1944 as he is listed with his wife Winifred and family in 1911 in Roscommon

Definitely what you have found there with John Dyer is correct. He was also known as Jack Dyer - My grand mothers Brother. The connection to Roscrea is also correct. When my Grandmother married on 10.01.1940, her father was mentioned on the cert which to me would show that he was still alive at the time? I could be wrong. Her mother Margaret did die young so I am certain the death record you located also is correct. I just cannot seem to find out any more about James himself - birth and death wise.

There are too many James DYER/DWYERs in the Tipperary area with a father named John to be certain of a birth without more information

I would be 90% that his mother's name was Margaret based on the children's names
However that is not 100% and there are several John DYER/DWYERs with a wife named Margaret at the time

References to a person being deceased is not consistent on records - it depended on the registrar
I would take it that a person was deceased if mentioned but not assume they are alive if it is not

Have you tried to locate a burial for Margaret as James may be buried with her
