Title: 1911 census job translations please
Post by: teach3r on Wednesday 31 May 17 15:32 BST (UK)
Thank you for any help that can be given.

I have attached an extract from the 1911 census.  I would be grateful if anyone could help me with the translation please.

From previous help on Rootschat for a different extract I am confident that it is "Farmer's daughter working .." but the last word has me stumped.

Thank you,

Nic

Dairy work, although my Welsh is very rusty

Gwaith = Work

Llaethdy = Dairy

Thanks Cas - That makes sense; I hadn't read the third letter as an 'e'.

Regards,

Nic

Your reading is not wrong

The English speaking enumerator wrote down what they heard - there is no "i " in the Welsh but the pronunciation would lead a non Welsh speaker to write it!

 Cas has the spelling bob on.

This is 1911 so what we see should be the householder's own handwriting.
