Title: Polish passports
Post by: Ginger71 on Friday 02 June 17 23:24 BST (UK)
Does anyone know if there is a database of passports issued by polish authorities from 1880 to 1920? I found a passport number included on naturalization documents in the national archives but am struggling to find my ancestor in any records available for his home.
For interest his name was Dov Ber Zanarotsky born C1872.  Place of birth Swir, Vilnius.  The surname could be derived from something else so any pointers would be great.

Vilnius is nowadays the capital of Lithuania - maybe you should be looking there?

The biggest issue with this region and the time is the constantly changing boarder and ruling authorities! Do you know if there are any reliable web links or would you imagine this is a case of contacting records offices out there?  The site  we have used is jewishgen and the litvak records on ancestry.  :-\

Usually, records stay where they are, even after borders change?

Maybe this will help?

Poland didn't come back as a State until 1918.
