Title: Thomas Roberts from Coventry
Post by: Sandyq on Saturday 03 June 17 14:30 BST (UK)
Thomas Roberts married Ellen Haglington in 1871 Kings Norton, and in the 1881census he gives his birthplace as Coventry c 1853. I can see him as a Private at Colchester in 1871, again Coventry is stated and his age ties up. I cannot find a relevant birth in Coventry, nor can I find him in 1861 when he would have been 8. Am I missing something obvious ?

Have you followed up on his Neice Eliza from the 1881 Census?

Haven't received as yet, but I believe the clue is in the 1881 census where an Eliza Roberts aged 15 is shown as niece,  I think she is the daughter of Samuel (Thomas's brother) and Esther,
and then Samuel and Thomas are the sons of Samuel (who was also a boatman)  and Ann Roberts and because of occupation they travelled extensively, looks like Thomas was born in Nottingham and not Coventry. Hopefully the marriage certificate will show the father as Samuel Roberts a Boatman.
Thanks for your help
