Title: Padstow Pearse
Post by: James Hawkey on Sunday 04 June 17 21:28 BST (UK)
I was wondering if anyone help, as I have hit a brick wall in my research. I am trying to find the parents of my fifth great grandmother Mary Pearse. Below is some information about her that may help.

Name- Mary Pearse
Born- abt 1805 Padstow Cornwall
Spouse- Henry Thomas Hawkey
Marriage- 10/01/1833 Padstow Cornwall
Occupation- School mistress
Death- 1881 St Columb Major Cornwall. I think?

In the 1841 census they live in church street Padstow. Following this they lived at bridge hill in St Columb Major.

I really want to go a generation back to her parents.

I hope you can help.

Hi

My friend has Pearce FH in Cornwall and found the surname spelt as Pearce/Pearse/Pierce making research rather a problem

Yes I have found this too. At the moment I have gone on a hunch to see if they have any other Pearse's in the 1841cencus nearby. There is a William pearse roughly ten years older with his wife and children in the the same street "church street".  I thought could be Mary's brother and managed to find his parents. Can't be sure if they are Mary's also though?

My grandfathers 2nd wife was a Pearse.
Also spelled Pearce :-\

But she was from Somerset.

I wish you well with your research, but personally I prefer facts, documents and data rather than hunches, assumptions and guesswork? :-\

there was a William & Ann/Nancy Pearce baptising children in Padstow
William bp 25 Nov 1795
Peter bp 8 Nov 1797 - buried 19 April 1803
Mary bp 24 Sep 1801
Jane bp 21 Feb 1805 - buried 22 Nov 1825 aged 20

William Pearce bd 16 July 1833 aged 67
Ann Pearce buried 4 May 1830 aged 60

I wonder if Mary lost a few years when she married a slightly younger man? She wouldn't be the first woman to do so.

The William in Church Street was a shipwright and his marriage is on the opc database, his father was Thomas

Thomas made a will which is at the record office - ref AP/P/4760 will of Thomas Pearce shipwright of Padstow 1833. You could check in case he did have a daughter Mary.
By the way, if you're going to the record office, you'll need to book, it gets busy.

I came to the same conclusion osprey ;D
They seem to be the only Couple Baptising Padstow right time-frame.

Possible Marriage 18 Dec 1794 St Petroc, William PEARCE, Bachelor, to Ann RUNNALLS, Spinster

thanks, Trish!

The only other thing that crosses my mind is a possible non-conformist family, but there don't seem to be any records online for Padstow but that isn't unusual.

Nearest I could find was a baptism on the Liskeard Circuit? But that covers the Liskeard and Looe areas?!

Thank you,

That's really helpful. I have booked time at the record office already. I will look into what you've all said  :)

that baptism was in Liskeard Methodist so would be a bit of a trek to go to church!

Hi, Thank you. That is very helpful indeed. I also assume William the Father and Ann (Nancy) is the mother. I believe her surname to be Runnalls Marrying 1794 in Padstow in the OPC search. Ancestry shows one for the same date, place etc but with the surname Perrenal which I think is a miss translation.

Thomas Henry is my ancestor by the way

I appreciate your help
