Title: Joseph Bowman & Mary Trimble
Post by: Carbar on Sunday 11 June 17 14:08 BST (UK)
I am looking into the family of Joseph Bowman - born about 1755 in Cumberland - Cockermouth area possibly. He married Mary Trimbel on 29 Nov 1778 in Lowes-water, Cumberland. Mary & Joseph had at least 5 sons - William, John, Joseph, Larkham & George.

So far I have been unable to locate the birth or baptism of Mary & so far, do not know who her parents were or any siblings.

I have located a William & Christian Trimble who had a daughter Jane, baptised 19 Jul 1760 in Whitehaven, I have also found a ralph & Mary Trimble who had a son Jonathon baptised 16 Sep 1759 in Whitehaven & a Gawen Trimble who had sons Benjamin & William baptised 23 sep 1769 in St Bees (?). I have also found a Robert & Martha Trimble whose son John was baptised 18 aug 1772 in Crosswaite. I presume these families are linked in someway as there seem to be very few Trimbles in the area at that time, however, I have not yet found a link between them or to my Mary Trimble. I presume they moved to Cumberland from somewhere else but as yet have no clues to go on.

Any hints on Mary Trimble or Joseph Bowman would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Do not ignore the variant spelling TREMBLE. :)

Thank you. I think this one is too young, Mary would have been 20yrs old if she were baptised in 1775.

Mary & Joseph were married in 1778 & their son William was born in 1781. As they were married in Lowes-Water, I am assuming she may have been resident there at the time of marriage. I understand this is not far from Cockermouth where their descendants remained for several generations.

Thank you for taking the time to help me though, it is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Carole

It is possible that the family were non-conformists. The fourth son, Larkham, may have been named after George Larkham the Congregational minister after the restoration in 1660. His story is well documented but the name points to a link with the Congregationalists.

Thank you. That's another avenue to explore. Larkham was baptised at All Saints in Cockermouth on 25th Feb 1788.

I have located a baptism for Ann Bowman 18th May 1755 at All Saints, daughter of John Bowman, I have also located a Thomas & a William who were all having children baptised at All Saints around the same sort of time Joseph's children were, so am thinking these are possibly all related.

Kind regards

I think this is the Scottish name Turnbull which became Trimble in Ireland.

Skoosh.
