Hoping some kind person can help me again.
Looking for Harry John Fox born c 1877 was a vicar on the Isle of Wight.
He was born in Norfolk.
Looking for info on his vicar info.
thank you
-
Where have you already found him? SO we don't duplicate work.
Have you found him on all censuses, for example?
-
Crockford's Clerical Directory is the place to look.
Available on Ancestry
-
The only Harry John Fox I can see who was born Norfolk around that time, on 1901 is a game keeper, and later is in the Royal Navy and listed as a Baptist.
So if he became a Baptist Minister, as opposed to a CofE vicar, then he wont be in Crockfords, but the Baptist Union Archives may help.
But this may be a different man. Hence - what have you got already on him?
-
I am helping a relative look for their family history.
Harry John Fox was the son of Robert and Martha.
I found him on the 1881 census and all they know was he was a vicar.
-
Here is that 1881 - it tells us he was born Great Ellingham.
Great Ellingham
Robert 47 labourer
Martha 31
Harry John 4 bn Great Ellingham
James 3
William 1
and 1891
Great Ellingham
Robert 57 labourer bn G E
Martha 41 bn Deopham
Harry John 14 Bricklayers labourer bn GE
James 13
William 11

They know the family came from Norfolk but was supposed to of been a vicar in the Isle of Wight can find nothing listed for him as a vicar
-
Is he their direct ancestor? If so, best to go back a stage (forward in time, back in steps of research!) . Have they got birth certs of any of his children, what was his occupation on them, when and where did he marry, what was his occupation then, etc. One step at a time.
-
You could try doing a free search of the British Newspapers on FMPast. There are quite a few mentions of Rev H J Fox.
Maureen
-
They don't know much but it was to do with his mothers side.
Thank you for the info will have a look at the newspapers
-
The Harry Fox mentioned on 1901 census gives a different birthplace; Corpusty. I'm not familiar with Norfolk......could that be close to Gt. Ellingham? :-\
-
Maybe that 1901 one is a different guy.
But the one in the Royal Navy was bn Great Ellingham. He was a Baptist.
His records are no NAtional Archives - born January 1877

I think we are on the right lines. He dies in 1962, right age for 1877 birth
Probate Index Entry
Rev HArry John Fox of 38 Queens Road Buckland Portsmouth Clerk died 27 Sep 1962 at Priorsdean Hospital Milton Rd Portsmouth Probate to Richard Dennis Pearce chartered accountant and William Henry Davies Baptist minister.
My guess is that your Harry became a Baptist Minister, after he left the Navy. Only a guess though!
Try contacting the Baptist Union (google for address, it is Didcot Oxon) whose archive department are very helpful.
-
Thank you for this info sounds like him

to resign the pastorate of the Bessels Green (Sevenoaks) Baptist Church.
Before going to Beesels Green at the end -of 1938. Mr. Fox was for eight

Even if someone has a subscription for the 1939 Register, they aren't allowed to tell you what is on it!
The Register is covered by copyright, and it's against FindMyPast's terms and conditions to disclose information.
It's also against the rules of RootsChat.
-
ok. I know who the two are on it wondered if the 3rd one not named i was their son that's all
-
I don't think they had any children. :-\
The other person seems to be Edith's mother-Susan L LEAT. I got lucky with a free search on that one-not many LEATs in Sevenoaks and Harry's name came up in the household.

Many thanks for this no proof they had a son then as I can find no birth anywhere for one
-
Hi,
Have you seen this 1901 census?
1901 RG13/1998 f.172 p.27 Vessels, Dorset
Registration district: Weymouth
Sub-registration district: Portland
Ship: Alexandra
Harry J FOX Single 24 Gunner RMA Ellingham, Attleborough, Norf
Attleborough is the closest town to the village of Great Ellingham
Regards,
Daisy
-
No hadn't seen that many thanks
-
I think that there is a possibility that Harry was married before his marriage to Edith LEAT.
I don't know if you downloaded the full Royal Marine record found by lizdb but looking at the free distorted image I think it shows that he was married in 1915,
-
Sorry, I'm having a bit of a problem with attachments.
The above looks like a 15 in the "when married column",
-
I did wonder as he was 49 when he married Edith so the son must of been his and his 1st wife
thank you
-
Son?
When and where born - have you found the birth reg in the new gro index to find mother's maiden name? Or has your friend got the birth cert - then you will see Harry's occupation at the time (ie was he still in the Navy or had he entered the Baptist Ministry by then) and mothers name, so we can find the marriage.
PS good find for 1901, Daisypetal. We weren't convinced about that gamekeeper were we!!
-
He remarried 1926 so I can search between those dates and perhaps find the son
-
As long as the son is now deceased, you can give us the name and what else you know about him. Was he an only child?
-
Possible marriage,
Harry J FOX
Sep Q 1915 Portsmouth 2b 1527
Mary MANSBRIDGE
I can't see any FOX/MANSBRIDGE births but Mary could have been married before so she would marry Harry using her 1st married surname but a child would show her maiden name.
-
Possible
Marriage
Jul/Aug/Sep 1915
Portsmouth
Harry J Fox / Mary Mansbridge
SNAP!
-
Found her death 1922
-
Don't know the sons name there was just a thing in the family that there was one
-
Did you know that Harry FOX wrote a book?
"Crinkle Crankle Lane"
http://portmanrarebooks.com/products/crinkle-crankle-lane.htm
The letter gives his address as 38 Queen's Road, the same as his death announcement.
-
No he didn't know anything except he was a minister on the IOW Harry was on my friend mothers side
-
Definitely no son by either of his wives that I find.
-
My best suggestion would be to get the 1915 marriage cert. to make sure that this Harry is the right one and that he was single at the time. More importantly it would tell you if Mary MANSBRIDGE had been married before because a birth of their child would probably be registered with her original maiden name, not the MANSBRIDGE surname. It could also be possible that a son was actually a step-son, a child of either Mary MANSBRIDGE or Edith LEAT.
-
Getting a copy of his Will may be a good move too, if he had any children then they are likely to be beneficiaries.
-
I told him to get the certificate as in 1911 he was 35 then and didn't marry till 1915 then again 1926
so thought that would show if he had been married before 1911 too.
-
never thought of that
-
Got probate but tells us nothing really.
-
I don't think Mary MANSBRIDGE had been married before. Her death in 1922 places her yob about 1880.
Just going by this free snippet (sorry about the OCR typos):
COPNOR PASTOR BEREAVED. reyret to mnnounco the death, which has taken place ** Sunnjside," aroad South.wa, of Mrs. Fox, wifİ Factor H. J. Fox, Copnor Baptist Tabernacle The deceased ladj was a native of Fare ham, and was foundation member of the local
April 11, 1922 - Portsmouth Evening News - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
......
she was a native of Fareham and there's really only one Mary MANSBRIDGE that fits.
Also-if Harry was single in 1911-could he really have wed, lost his wife and then wed again by 1915? You'd think something like that would show up on his RM records.

Got probate but tells us nothing really.
Probate won't, but the will might?
-
Have just applied for it
-
Thank you for the Mary Mansbridge
-
If it is his time as a Baptist Minister you are interested in, then I still recommend contacting the Baptist Union.
http://www.baptist.org.uk/
I know they have been very helpful to researchers in the past.
-
I am waiting on a reply from them and a couple of other places
