Evan is my Paternal grandfather, supposedly born in Swansea about 1882 - though he could have been born in the Cape Verde Islands and his father - Evan Jenkins worked as the coal station manager there for some years and some of his siblings were born there.
His mother was Grace Gowman. In the census - it says he was born in the late 1870's, then 10 years later the census says that Alfred was the first born - we have his birth certificate and that Evan was about 5 years old.
I have a cousin in Wales who has tried to find the birth records - but no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas please?
Many thanks Chrissie46

Hello KGarrad and Osprey,
Many thanks for your very informative replies.
KGarred -1891 Census - showing Grace, Elizabeth and Evan born in England? I wonder why? Also the Gowmon spelling.
I will see if I can obtain the certificate from GRO - 1882 - M Quarter in Swansea Volume 11A - Page 673.
1901 census - Evan was a Kitchener Scout in the Boer War - not for long but he was there - then the war ended.
my next mystery to solve is when he came to Australia - about 1912-13 we think. He joined the Army in 1915 - off to the WW1 in France etc. - until 1918 -19 - came back to Australia early 1920 with his wife and children - including my dad who was about 9-10 months old. I have all of Evans War Records.
Yes Osprey - I did do the research some years back which you helped with - however, we have never been able to find the Birth Certificate - a visit to Swansea and they said they had no records. I am going back to the UK again at the end of the year and will have another go in person if I can't order it over the internet. I also have the Marriage Certificate.
Once again, thanks for the wonderful RootsChat service. Chrissie46

you can order online from the GRO, it's the cheapest way and the same cost for wherever it is posted to.

Thanks Osprey, will do so.

Spellings of names has always been a bit hit-and-miss! :-\
Only the 1911 shows the original handwriting of someone at each address.
Other censuses show the forms filled out by the enumerator.
Add in transcription issues, and (sometimes!) handwriting issues, and it's a wonder any surname comes out correctly!
I used FamilySearch - which shows transcriptions only.
Ancestry, FindMyPast, The Genealogist etc would show the handwritten forms.
And, it's not uncommon to show placenames as "England" ;D
Many of the Isle of Man and Channel Island census returns show just that ::)
(I have researched both locations! My ancestors were on Jersey in 1841; and because I live on the Isle of Man I have done a few Manx trees for friends)

Thank you KGarred,
All this makes our research so interesting. I'll see if I can get the certificate from GRO and let you and Osprey know.
Cheers from Oz

Hello Osprey and KGarrad,
I have ordered the Birth Certificate - very easy to do - will let you know when it arrives. Cost about $16.80 AUD.
Now, I'm sorry to be somewhat ignorant or a bit slow or something - but I cannot work out how to go onto the GRO and find someone's birth details as you did for Evan Jenkins.
The site I am going onto says I have to put in - Name - Quarter - Mothers Maiden Name - DOB etc. I don't know the DOB, it is what I am trying to find out. Any help would be gratefully received.
Also I notice at the bottom of your posts - there are names and areas listed - I presume these are the areas you are researching? How does one put them on?
Man thanks for all your assistance
Cheers Chrissie 46 :) :D

The GRO search page is:
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
To change the text on your profile, click on "Profile" on the dark brown bar, then under "Your Profile" on the left, click on "Forum Profile".
It's also a good idea to put something in the Location box.
Knowing where in the world a RootsChatter lives sometimes helps when making research suggestions.

Thank you KGarrad, I will give all those things a go.

Hello KGarrad and Osprey,
the birth certificate arrived today - I'm so chuffed. Evan Jenkins was born on the 26th November 1881 at 36 Waterloo Street, Swansea N.S.D. though his birth was not registered until 6th January 1882.
Many thanks to you and anyone else who have assisted me.
Cheers Chrissie46
PS. Does anyone know if I can track down the shipping records of when he came to Australia - I think about 1912-13.

UK Outward Passenger Lists are available on Ancestry and FindMyPast. ;D
Ancestry also has a possible hit on New South Wales Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists?

Thanks KGarred,
