Title: ELLEN GREEN,born 1847,West Hanningfield
Post by: gracol on Tuesday 13 June 17 20:25 BST (UK)
In 1872 she married JAMES MASON in Islington, draper,(his father Benjamin Mason, gentleman,of Seaford Sussex). In 1875 a daughter,Ellen Beatrice Mason, was baptised in Southampton.
In the 1901 &1911 censuses Ellen Mason is in Great Baddow living with her daughter now Beatrice Helen Peacock.
In the 1881 census Beatrice Mason is shown as a visitor in a household in Margaretting, and in the 1891 census Beatrice H Mason is shown as a visitor in a relations house in Great Baddow (Galleywood Common).
I cannot find Ellen Mason in the 1881 & 1891 censuses (or her husband James),for some reason apparently not living with her young daughter on these two dates.
Should really appreciate any help as to her whereabouts during this period.

Do you have a place and date of death for James?

I see from a tree on ancestry that Ellen had brothers who emigrated to Australia and New Zealand; maybe she and James gave it a try too, with the intention of their daughter joining them at a later date.

Have two families been confused as Beatrice Helen was baptized in Margarettiing Essex 1875. to James and Ellen Mason see previous post.

You have Ellen Beatrice baptized Southampton 1875 to James and Ellen Mason and the marriage you found James is a Draper. Edit see post below, no father named just mother Ellen Mason probably illegitimate.

Added found the marriage and Ellen Green is of West Hanningfield with father George deceased.
Essex Record Office Parish Registers George Green buried 6 November 1866 age 65.
West Hanningfield
He left a will wife Sophia is an executor states he died 30 October 1866

I'm confused as well, if Ellen Beatrice was baptised in Southampton there is a Beatrice Mason in the 1901 at South Stoneham, Hampshire, born 1876 Southampton. She is a servant.

Just to keep entries separate
the Ellen Beatrice Mason baptized Southampton transcribed on ancestry has only mothers name of Ellen Mason, so I think that's the wrong one.

Very many thanks for all your replies.
I do have my tree on Ancestry (COLINGREEN91).
The Essex Standard,6 Sept 1872,reports the marriage, and confirms Ellens father as the late George Green of West Hanningfield.
I obviously had the wrong birthplace for  Beatrice Helen Mason, thanks for the Margaretting entry.
Discovered James Masons death-1900 Rochford District, confirmed by his will (then living in Great Wakering) as he left his estate partly to a John Millbank.Ellen Mason in the 1911 census had her sister Sophia Ann Milbank (3 times married!) living with her. Needs some further investigation.
Still cannot find James Mason in the 1891 census though ??
or
Ellen Mason in 1881 and 1891 ?? Puzzling.
Thanks again for the replies,
Colin

Discovered James Masons death-1900 Rochford District, confirmed by his will (then living in Great Wakering) as he left his estate partly to a John Millbank.

HAve you purchased a copy of the actual Will?
I see from the Index entry that his Executors were John Milbank and Thomas Wiggins.

That does not mean they were the beneficiaries of the Estate though. You need to get a copy of the Will to find that out.

There's an Ellen Mason b Chelmsford c1850, married, working as a sick nurse in East Teignmouth, Devon on 1891. Possible?

If James Mason of Great Wakering is the one you are looking for he was buried Great Wakering 21 April 1900 age 59.
The will and its contents will prove or disprove.

ADDED
I don't think the Rochford 1900 death is yours.
The James Mason born 1841 Great Wakering became a mariner and can be followed on the census 1841-1891. He is the son of John Mason and Tamar Grimes, actually registered 1840 Rochford Union mmn Grimes.
After John Mason dies Tamar married Jacob Milbank Say 10 June 1848 at Great Wakering, see also 1851 census James Mason aged 10 and brother Samuel Mason 8 in household of Jacob Milbank Say 29 and Tamar age 29, with children Hannah Milbank Say 3 and William Milbank Say age 1

Thanks so much for the further replies.
Rather jumped to conclusions regarding that particular Millbank connection. The 1891 Devon entry is interesting.
Will try and delve deeper, very intrigued as to what happened.

Still looking!
The 1881 census for Margeretting lists --as you say Amondg--James Mason at the Eagle, this is number 100 in the census. The next page of the census, number 110 refers to another Eagle the licensee being Stephen Wright born Norwich.
I cannot find any reference on line to two Eagles in Margaretting.
Wondered --Amondg--if there were two,James Mason's being the Spreading Eagle as you suggest?

I am now totally confused!!
James Mason's father was BENJAMIN Mason (as the wedding certificate shows and the Essex Standard reports).
Beatrice Helen Mason baptised in Margaretting 1875 to James and Ellen,James a publican.1901 and 1911 censuses confirm her place and date of birth.
The 1851 census for Stoke upon Trent shows James Mason age 9,born Hanley (agreeing with the 1881 Margaretting census),but his father is SAMUEL Mason.
Should really appreciate any suggestions as to what is going on here !!

From the notes of Essex Pub History
The pub listed on the census re James Mason as The Eagle, is known locally as the Spreading Eagle.

The parish registers online for Margretting at the Essex Record Office, burials only go to 1897 and James Mason is not listed to that point so presumably still alive as of 1897.

Places of birth on census records should not be taken at face value, it may be the last place he remembers living and assumed he was born there.

What about the witnesses to the marriage Richard Mason and Catherine Mason, is Richard a brother
and Catherine a sister or are they husband and wife?

They were husband and wife, Richard Mason married Catherine Crossland 1859 in Nottinghamshire.

James gave their address of 4 Cloudsly Square when he applied for a marriage license.

Richard is a carpenter and alternately gives his POB as Hannly or Stoke on Trent Staffordshire.

1841 census
Union Street, Swinnerton, near Stoke on Trent Staffordshire
Benjamin Mason 40 carpenter  looks like not born in county
Ann 40                                   ditto
Robert 16
Richard 10
Elleanor 6  (later Elleanor Jane)
Mary Anne 4
JAMES 1

children all born in county.

Still checking on what happened to Benjamin as 1851 and 1861 Elleanor Jane Mason is with an aunt and uncle James and Mary Henshaw in Worcestershire, states born Hunelly Staffordshire.

James Mason is 40 in 1881 Margretting Essex

James Mason registered Stoke on Trent 1840 mothers maiden name HENSHAW.

This ties in with his sister Elleanor Jane  being with the Henshaw's in 1851, 1861 Worcestershire.

Ann Mason age 50 death registered Stoke On Trent 1853
Ann the mother was probaly ill so the children went to relatives or possibly the workhouse?.

Your next move is possible baptisms at Hunelly Staffordshire for the children of Benjamin and Ann
Mason.

James Henshaw  is Ann Mason brother, check Worcestershire for the Henshaw family and you may find the Mason family. Sometimes you have to go backwards and sideways to get the facts in the middle. Finding the family/children 1851.

I found brother Richard in 1861 already in Islington with his wife Catherine and son Wiliam

Ancestry 1851 transcribed as Benjamin Moson area known as Chase

Benjamin 52 born Sunderland, carpenter head widowed ?
Robert 24 painter born Stoke on Trent Suffolk? this why so hard to find
Richard 20 carpenter          ditto
Mary Ann 14                      ditto
James 10 scholar                ditto

have submitted a request to change name

Benjamin being widowed doesn't tie in with death of Ann his wife in 1853 so maybe not the right one
however I've seen stranger things, perhaps it was easier to say he was widowed rather than my wife I've left back in Staffordshire.

Very many thanks Amondg.
I have been looking into James' father, Benjamin, the newspaper article re the marriage shows him as gentleman,of Seaford Sussex.
Directories show him as ,agent to Howard de Walden in 1858,and as a land and house agent in later years. In 1856 he married Caroline Field O'Callaghan ,described as a widower and builder,in Cripplegate (his father Benjamin, deceased,a builder).1861 census living in Seaford with servant, retired builder, born Sunderland Durham.1871 census similar living in Brighton.
His Will in 1876,proved by Richard Mason, son,of Islington, also a builder, and also proved by Robert Henshaw Mason, son,of Notting Hill, gentleman.
Thanks again for your latest replies, think it's all coming together!!

Have found in 1881 census--St Georges Hanover Square London,a Helen Mason,widow,28,nurse,born Essex Chelmsford,in the household of William Ridley.
Possibly the same Ellen Mason as found in Mabel Bagshawe's earlier post re the 1891 census?

Benjamin Mason's marriage to Caroline Field O'Callaghan---her father was Thomas Shrapnel Biddalph,a clergyman--probably distantly related to the inventor of shrapnel !!

Wondered if anyone can find Ellen's husband-James Mason-in the 1861 census?
He was born in 1841 in Hanley Staffordshire, father Benjamin, mother Anne,In 1871 he was a drapers assistant in Whitechapel, his marriage details the following year showing him as a draper.
