Title: Military Deserter 1881 UK
Post by: Verna Mac on Wednesday 14 June 17 03:17 BST (UK)
Looking for military information on Alfred BRADSHAW born 1861, in East Surrey Regiment, 3rd Battallion, supposedly deserted in May 1881. Number 753.

I have been told that there may be information on Ancestry, but I don't have the access.

Any info on his military "career" and desertion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps

These records are showing on Ancestry as being on Fold3 which I believe you need an additional subscription for.  :-\  Sometimes Fold 3 records are also available on F.M.P or TNA websites

The records on Fold3 that Rosie identifies are from the Police Gazette lists of deserters published in Nov and Dec 1881.  I've checked FindMyPast, they aren't there.

Rosie also suggests the National Archives.  There are other records which may be of help held in the Surrey History Centre, some listed here http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_aq=3rd%20east%20surrey&_or1=regiment&_or2=battalion&_dss=range&_ro=any&_p=1800&_st=adv

There appear to be no service records for him on the subscription sites.

Thank you for that Rosie and Max. So it appears that he is going to be difficult.
I will check out the Surrey History and see how we go.
Thanks again
