Title: Sarah Cresswell/Ann Coppins/Richard Coppins
Post by: mary1170 on Wednesday 14 June 17 06:58 BST (UK)
Help!

I am trying to find information on Sarah Cresswell born c1794 Minster, Hamps (I presume it means Minstead, Hampshire)?  She married a Richard Coppins and later settled in Saint Pancras, Middlesex, London.
Also Ann Coppins born c1802 Minster, Hamps (I am presuming it is a sister to Richard Coppins husband of Sarah Cresswell- any information on Richard would also be appreciated).
I have these details from the Census.
If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Cheers
Mary

We shouldnt be in a position where you have omitted information.

Eg When and where was the Cresswell- coppins marriage?
What names witness?

When did Richard die? Why no age/ birthyear for him?

Pauline

Hi Pauline

The reason the information has been omitted is because there is nothing.
I have no birth date, no marriage date, no death date.
Any information would be a plus, I have been researching for 20 years....

Thanks again
Mary

Arthur appears to have been christened in Southampton in 1818 (familysearch)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3L1-7VZ

The next probable child is John bapt 14 January 1821   CHRIST CHURCH, SOUTHWARK

The last child George was born 29 May 1837
christening 6 August 1837   OLD CHURCH, SAINT PANCRAS - parents Richard & Sarah.

I would think it is possible Richard was in the Forces as a couple of children born Ireland

I can't see a marriage for Richard Coppins and Sarah Cresswell , but there is one for Richard Coppins and Sarah Slater 21 Dec 1817 at Southampton SS Lawrence & John. There is an on line tree which has a Sarah Cresswell as Grandchild of this couple.

1861 census in St Pancras
Sarah Coppin  b 1796 Menestead Hampshire
Ann Suter ( transcribed Luter ) sister b 1804 Menestead

Baptisms

Sarah Suter 2 Nov 1794 Minstead daughter of John & Mary
Ann Suter 29 Nov 1801 Minstead      "             "        "

There are no baptisms for Slater in Minstead which suggests a possible transcription error in the 1817 marriage which I gave in my previous reply - for Slater read Suter ?

My husbands GG Grandmother was Sarah Cresswell Coppins b 131-7-1831 Saint Pancras Middlesex London, married George Ashwood 26-3-1852 St Marylebone London, died 19-10-1871 Grafton NSW Australia.
The information is believed to have come from the death certificate.
Sarah Cresswell Coppins is the daughter of Richard Coppins and Sarah Cresswell.

That may be a lead....that Richard Coppins was in the military which may explain the births of 2 of the children in the census appearing as born Ireland.  How do I research if this is correct?  Perhaps Richard Coppins was Irish??

I can only see a plain Sarah coppins baptism (no Cresswell).
The 1852 marriage index does not show any middle name.

Is there an occupation listed on any of the richard-sarah  kids' baptisms (1818-1836ish)?

What names witness the 1852 marriage?

Following on from Pauline mentioning the  marriage index, the parish register for the marriage and the brides signature when she married George Ashwood do not have a middle name for Sarah Coppins.

It looks more like one of the 'added on later' middle names  :-\

Witnesses were Charles Henry Ashwood & Sarah Anne Ashwood.
Sarah's father Richard was a Tailor.

Thank you for your PM , Mary. It's best to reply on this thread so that others are kept in the loop with any progress that's been made.

There is a possible connection to the Cresswell family , but I can't see any evidence for Sarah Cresswell Coppins , as has been indicated by other Rootschatters.

Mary Coppins , full age spinster , father Richard Coppins , dead , married 25 Dec 1852 St Pancras
Frederick Creswell , full age bachelor, law clerk , father John Creswell painter.

Just for the record.

Sarah COPPINS was born 7 Jul 1831 at St Pancras Middlesex England, daughter of Richard & Sarah COPPINS nee SUTER.
She married George ASHWOOD on 26 Mar 1852 at St Marylebone Middlesex, and emigrated to Australia in 1852-3.

Richard COPPINS and Sarah SUTER were married on 21 Dec 1817 at Southampton Hampshire.

Richard COPPINS was baptised 29 Jan 1797 at Lenham Kent, son of Arthur Britcher and Ann COPPINS nee HOW (formerly LOUDER).  Richard died 22 Apr 1884 at Altmar Oswego New York USA.  Richard was a tailor, and as far as I know, he was NOT in the army, but the family did spend some time in Ireland.  Richard left England about 1838-39, and remarried in America in 1850.

Sarah SUTER was baptised 2 Nov 1794 at Minstead Hampshire, daughter of John and Mary SUTER nee HOLMAN.  Sarah died 10 Sep 1871 at St Pancras Middlesex.  Sarah's sister, Ann SUTER (incorrectly listed as Ann COPPINS in the 1871 Census), was baptised 29 Nov 1801 at Minstead, and died 1 Jun 1872 at St Pancras, and never married.

The surname CRESWELL is associated with the COPPINS family - Richard's sister Harriet married John CRESWELL in 1820 at Chatham Kent, and Richard and Sarah's daughter Mary COPPINS, married Frederick CRESWELL (John's son) in 1852 at St Pancras, and Jane FRANKLIN, widow of Richard and Sarah's son William Henry COPPINS, married John CRESWELL, son of John and brother of Frederick.

The mixup of the surname CRESWELL occurred about 40 years ago when my father and I made a mistake in our research, but that mistake has been handed on and on many times, even though we corrected our mistake about 35 years ago, the mistake still persists and is passed around among "researchers".

thank you
