Would really appreciate if anyone is heading to the Mitchell Library in Glasgow if they would mind looking up someone for me in the Poorhouse Relief Applications.☺
Name: Rachel Goldie
Died: 21st February 1870 age 27
Pauper Millworker City Poorhouse
74 Back Wynd, Glasgow
Parents Michael Goldie/Margaret Goldie nee Fisher? Frisher
Any mention of a child Mary born 1866 to Rachel? Illegitimate? What happened to the child? Or any other children? Any other info would be marvellous.
Many thanks ☺

Where was Mary born?
Have you checked if she's in the Poorhouse in 1871/1881?

Do you have the Registration District in Glasgow of the Poorhouse please?

Thanks everyone☺
My gg father John Mc Fadyen married a Mary Goldie in Kinning park in 1886, she was 19 which would match with the Mary born to Rachel in 1866. This mary was born to Rachel.
The confusion lies in their marriage certificate. Parents are John Goldie and Agnes Goldie nee Stevenson.
Since Mary was illegitimate and Rachels parents were Michael Goldie and Margaret Fisher and Michael was deceased when Rachel died I am wondering if Rachels daughter Mary was adopted and Michael had a brother John.
John and Agnes married in 1869, but in the 1881 census Their child Mary is 14 making her born in 1866, 3 years before they married!
This makes me think Rachel was destitute, a pauper and her father was deceased and the he had a brother who took in Mary, her child.
Trying to see if the poor records offer up more of her info ☺

The 1871 census was for John Algier and his wife Agnes. There are 6 boarders living with them aged from 3 to 14.
Beginning to wonder if Algier is the right name as I can't find trace of him appart from this census.
You say the parents on Mary's marriage cert are John and Agnes, maybe these are the same.

Govan was a separate parish, with its own, very well kept, records. They have survived and are with the other 2 Glasgow parishes at the Mitchell.

Hi there
Have you looked at the marriage of John Goldie and Agnes Stevenson to confirm his parents' names?
I think young Mary was already with John Goldie and Agnes Stevenson by 1871. This is a not great transcript from 1871:
Jean Goldie 21 collier b. Glasgow
Agnes Goldie 22 b. Campsie Stirlingshire (matches with 1881)
Mary Goldie 4 daughter b. Glasgow
Address: 62 Main Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow Gorbals
First born son John may have died by now? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQQX-WQL

From info already mentioned by Annie and Lodger, have a look at the listings for the Glasgow area here www.workhouses.org.uk/Glasgow/

For Michael Goldie and wife Margaret, I can only see one baptism for one of their children on the SP RC database:
Margaret Goldy b. 3/4/1843 and bpt. 18/4/1843 at Glasgow, St Andrew's
Parents Michael Goldy and Margaret Fisker
Have you found Rachel in early censuses pre her death in 1870? Struggling to see her so far (or also the John Goldie we have been discussing here pre 1871).

Possible death entry for Rachel's mother?
Margaret Goldie aged 62 in 1881 - Refs 644/6 408 St Rollox/Glasgow
Margaret Fisher aged 62 in 1881 - Refs 644/6 408 St Rollox/Glasgow
Possible remarriage for mother Margaret as I think she also shows as Bryson, with the same refs:
Margaret Bryson aged 62 in 1881 - Refs 644/6 408 St Rollox/Glasgow
The 1871 census shows a Margaret Bryson, aged 53 and born in Ireland, at the City Parish Poohouse. Rachel had been there at the time of her death in 1870 from what you mentioned earlier.

Sorry! I keep on posting in bits and varied pieces ::)
I think this might be Rachel with mother in 1851. She is down as Gourlay from the Freecen transcript. The family showing as lodgers in the Blair household :
James Bryson 24, tailor b. Ireland
Margaet Bryson 30, tailor's wife b. Ireland
Rachel Gourlay 12 b. Glasgow
John Gourlay 10 b. Glasgow
James Bryson 3 b. Glasgow
Catherine Bryson 10 months b. Glasgow
Address: 80 Bridgegate Street 2nd Land, Glasgow
There is this RC brith & christening entry on SP:
Rachel GOURLY b. 22/3/1839 and bpt. 28/4/1839. Parents Michael Gourley and Margaret LASHIRE.
Glasgow, St Andrew's
This would fit with this 1841 census entry:
Michael Gourly 45 journeyman b. Ireland
Margaret Gourley 25 b. Ireland
Rachel Gourley 2 b. Lanarkshire
John Gourley 6 months b. Lanarkshire
Address: Back Wynd, Glasgow
