Welcome to rootschat  :). Do tell us what your normal places are!!

You won't find certificates themselves on line (apart from older Scottish ones on ScotlandsPeople). England ones need to be ordered to the Register Office www.gro.gov.uk, cost £9.25.

FreeBMD isn't part of Ancestry, though Ancestry have adopted some of FreeBMD's indexing.  FreeBMD continues to add to its indexes and correct errors found, so it is always worth looking there.

We will be better able to help if you tell us who you are looking for and where the birth is expected to have taken place (assuming the person is now deceased - we can't name living people on here).

Hi

Do you know who the parents are.  It might be worth searching by their surnames.  The name the person you are searching for may not be the one you know them by.

I never use Ancestry for BMD searches! ;)

Always use https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl.

However Ancestry have post 1983 indexes. Though as I understand it you can't buy the certificate if birth was less that 50 years ago unless you know the exact date of birth.

Do you want the name of the person I'm looking for, or my connection?
I can only assume his parents surname was the same as his own! not much help I know

If you tell us what you know about the person sought, we will be better able to help.

Especially:

His name.
Marriage details - when, where, to whom.
Death details - when, where.

Death was in Birmingham I see.

Is there also evidence that he was born there?

WOW‼️‼️‼️
I have only joined 'roots' this afternoon, not sure if I'm replying to you correctly!
I am truly overwhelmed with what's been found! I now need time to get my head around all that info you've sent me!
As far as I know his parents were Henry & Rose
Rose surname, didn't know?
Brother was Henry
Had a sister too, known as Betty, could obviously be short for Elizabeth?

Thank you, I hope to keep in touch with you as I'm so excited, I can't think straight! xx

Hi Carol

For you and anyone else who stumbles across this topic

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or FindMyPast or the transcription you are looking for can't be found on freebmd as it's still a work in progress, the General Register Office (GRO) birth marriage and death indexes 1837-2006 can be found on Family Search courtesy of their association with FindMyPast without a subscription

Births

Deaths

If you can afford to get this certificate (£9.25 from https://www.gro.gov.uk) you will know with certainty the names & occupations of Henry & Rose's fathers and be able to trace the families back.

For future reference, you need to be a little flexible with birth registrations.

The index are divided into quarters, March, June, September and December  covering three months,  and as you have 42 days in which to register a birth, it can often appear in the following quarter. It is quite normal to find a birth in say early March, not registered until April, so it will appear in the June  quarter, as does Walter's birth.

Deaths are usually registered within five days, so unless the death occurs on last couple of days of a quarter, they appear when expected. Marriages are always found in the quarter when it took place.

You will pick up a lot of helpful tips as you progress with your research. :) :) ;)
