Title: 1841 Census Spencer family
Post by: Suzy100 on Friday 16 June 17 21:01 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone could help me I seem to have lost a whole family in 1841.
William Henry Spencer born 1786 St Annes, Soho dies 1851.  Married Rebecca Susannah Gould in 1804 in St Mary's Lambeth.  Rebecca died in 1845.  They had 10 children.

Mary Ann born 1806  Mar 1830
Catherine Jane born 1808 Mar 1832
Henry William 1812
James 1813   Mar 1832
Elizabeth 1818
George 1820  Mar 1846
Caroline Louisa 1822
Eleanor 1824 Died 1824
Julia Maria 1825  Mar 1850
Matilda Sophia 1829 Mar 1858

I have found various people with same names and years born but none together.  Yet I have William Henry in 1851 census widower living with Elizabeth, Matilda, Mary Ann Jones and a grand daughter Harriet Spencer - not sure yet who her mother or father is.

William Henry occupation was a Gilder

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I thought at first that this might be William Henry, but no sign of Matilda or Mary Ann Jones:

What age was your Harriet Spencer on the 1851 Census?

There's a Rebecca Spencer aged 57 in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Middlesex in 1841.
The age is slightly out, but it could be her.
I honestly don't know if this was at that time a workhouse, a hospital or an asylum.

What do you see for later census records, 1851+? Where do you next see any of these people?

A Harriett Rebecca Susan Spencer was born in Marylebone sept quarter 1842 mmn Hurst
George Spencer married Harriet Hurst on 10th May 1846 in Marylebone. Marriage certificate on Ancestry confirms his father as William Henry Spencer, Carver and Guilder. George was also a Carver and Guilder.

Susanna is also their daughter, baptised 12 Aug 1817 at St Giles in the Fields, Holborn.  Parent's address, Meards Court, Westminster, and father's occupation of Japanner are both the same as for the other children who were baptised in Westminster.

As George was married in Marylebone, this is possibly Henry, George (a Carver), Elizabeth and Caroline together in Marylebone.  Ages of adults were supposed to be rounded down in 1841 and it appears that the enumerator has complied here.

Oh dear now I am confused I have two Harriet Rebecca Susanna Spencers, one born 1842 the other born 1818 as per the 1861 census she is a Companion.  However I also have a Susanna Spencer born 1817 for which I have a baptism.  I seem to have Spencers coming from everywhere now  ::).  Am away now for a week but will carry on my quest when I return!

Many thanks

In 1841 daughter Mary Ann has married James Jones and can be found on Chapel Street
with children William 15, Martha 15 and Matilda 5 months.

They married 5 July 1830 St Mary Lambeth witness William Henry Spencer and Catherine Spencer.
