Hello ospan,
You may be lucky with the birth place when obtaining a printout for one of the children born after October 1875.....
1875/12941 Gare John Samuel Isabella John -
1891/16262 Gare Robert Boyd Walker Isabella John -
1887/18369 Gare Samuel Stewart Isabella John -
1879/7881 Gare William Hayes Isabella John -
1882/8639 Gare David Hunter Isabella John

Have you obtained a death printout for Isabella? This may also contain some useful information, although only as accurate as the knowledge of the person providing the details.

This does not answer your question about Isabella but is an informative obituary about her husband......
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TT19180105.2.17?query=gare
Obituary mentions six sons [only five found] & a daughter also not found in the NZ BDM on line index.
Her marriage:
1903/6270 Jessie Margaret Gare John Tippett

82 GARE Isabella d.15 Apr.1893 41yrs
dau of James Russell & Jeanette Hunter (?) m. John Gare
Could she have been Scottish?
children of James Russell and Janet Hunter:
Alexander 1844: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZP-6JW
John 1846: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZP-72R
James 1848: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZP-ZZ9
Isabella 1851: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYC7-ZQ1
This family seem to have come to Victoria in 1852 on the FLORA, minus John (died young?)
https://www.prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/passenger-records-and-immigration/assisted-passenger-lists
James, 29
Janet, 24
Alexander, 8
James, 3
Isabella, infant.
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj
A Janette Hunter, parents James and Janette, died in 1854 -
A James Russell died in 1871, listing parents as Alexander and Jannet (nee Hunter), aged 48 - this may be the father James, and the index has mixed up wife and mother's names.
So if this is the right Isabella, she must have come from Victoria to NZ at some point - perhaps following a brother?

Go to Archives and look up Samuel Gare's WW1 record. It gives details about the parents as told by Samuel.

Further to reply #4.....
The Mrs. J. W. Gare mentioned as next of kin would appear to be Samuel's wife?
Marriage:
1923/1906 Jessie Wyness Mitchell Samuel Stewart Gare
Direct link to WW1 file:
https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=16784959&digital=yes
[Parents shown on File page 15]
Same birth year for Samuel Stewart Gare [1887] but mother shown as Elizabeth. See NZ BDM records at reply #1, mother recorded as Isabella.
Minniehaha.
-
The date of Samuel's birth was 17.12.1886.
His WW1 records show this as being 17.9.1887.

If John Gare was born in Somerset, as his son Samuel says in his attestation for WW1, then his mother's maiden name is Hayes. See GRO at https://www.gro.gov.uk/ (https://www.gro.gov.uk/).
This explains the Hayes in the name of the second son, William Hayes.
Now, of the remaining children, which one has a surname as a second christian name?
Jorose's message about James Russell and Janet Hunter would fulfill this - David Hunter Gare
Regards
Jean
PS, The other two children are listed under the name of Gear
Alexander George 1877/13968
Jessie Margaret 1884/16215

Hi ospan
There are numerous online trees for the GARE family of Waipori (@ ancestry.com).
Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, is given as the birthplace of Isabella RUSSELL (and also as the marriage place of her parents.)

Hi there , was just doing family research on old Google and this popped up , I am lucky enough to be part of a big family tree on Ancestry.com that follows a lot of our family lines from waipori. Isabella and John were my Great great grandparents . Isabellas parents were James Russle and Janet Hunter both born in Cumbernauld DumbartonShire Scotland. James Died in 1871 Alexandra Victoria aus and Janet died 1854 Geelong Victoria Aus . I see someone about the hayes name earlier but that would have come from John Gares mother Leah Hayes 😊 very hard to follow when generations use the same names !
Hope this is of some help
Cheers

Hopefully it is of some use , it took me a long time to figure out and almost number the people on the tree with the same name , I know with the Gare line they all used family names.....for everyone ! So the brothers and sisters used their brothers and sisters names for their children leading to a big line of confusion and working with dates ! .... my own father did this naming my brother Ian Robert after his brother Ian Robert and then his Father was Ian lomas!

Hopefully ospan will get notification and find your very useful post.
