Probably Kelso would have been pronounced Kelsey, it would be in Scotland where the name originates!

Who knows? Scottish names get butchered crossing the Atlantic, particularly after a spell in Ireland!

Your very welcome, always pleased to help.
The surname change Kelso/Kelsey was happening in the USA as early as the 1700's, so difficult to say what that reason might have been.

Place-names ending in "o" in the south of Scotland are frequently pronounced locally with an "ey" although written as Kelso, Stobo, Posso, Cammo, Foggo etc! In this case the Scots pronounciation Kelsey has stuck, Kelso, the place meaning little the US.
