Title: Placename in Norfolk please?
Post by: bugbear on Monday 19 June 17 11:16 BST (UK)
This is from the Will of Samuel Murton, d1718; he left property
in North Lopham and Kenninghall.

But I can't read/decode the third location of his property.

It appears to say "Tastington" or "Taftington" (I'm never confident
of long-s).

But a google for
Code: [Select]
"Tastington" | "Taftington"   norfolk
gives no plausible results.

The image was taken with a camera from a micro film reader's screen.

Seems Samuel held property in Tottington .... though I must say it doesn't really look like that.

That looks convincing - despite the handwriting!!

Tottington is 15 miles from Kenninghall and North Lopham (which are barely a mile apart) which is a little surprising.

Thank you.

I wonder if the strangeness is a transcription error, made in 1718 (!!!!), since this will is a copy made for probate?

Further;
Tilney St Lawrence is located within a large parish of the same name, situated in the West Norfolk Local Government District. The parish has an area of 2,041 hectares (5,043 acres). The parish also contains the villages of Tilney St Lawrence, Tilney cum Islington and Islington. The parish that exists today used to be two separate parishes. They were Tilney St Lawrence and Tilney-cum-Islington which were combined in 1935 to form the fourth largest parish in the Marshland region. The name Tilney is thought to derive from the Old English for Tibba's homestead[4] and St Lawrence refers to the dedication of the village parish church. The name Islington is thought to derive from the Old English for enclosure of Elesa's people

I don't know if this will help but here is a map of all the parishes in Norfolk in the early 1800s. I wouldn't think places had changed much for the 1700s http://www.archives.norfolk.gov.uk/view/NCC098134
