Due to start on 6th July with Charles Dance, then Craig Revel Horwood, Clare Balding, Adil Ray and Emma Willis.
Dates to be announced: Lisa Hammond, Noel Clarke, Lulu, Fearne Cotton and Ruby Wax.
-
That seems to have come around very quickly. It doesn't seem that long since the last series finished. They usually keep us waiting much longer.
There are usually a couple of names that aren't familiar: Lisa Hammond? Noel Clarke? but they usually turn out to be the best anyway!
I hope the makers keep up the improvement of that last series and don't start concentrating on one ancestor again.
-
Lisa Hammond plays Donna in EastEnders; Noel Clarke was in Dr. Who.
-
Ah, yes, I remember Noel Clarke now - he was good in Dr Who.
Haven't watched Eastenders for years - too depressing a view of humankind. And the acting usually leaves a lot to be desired.
-
maybe at last something worth paying the licence for...

excellent! Thanks for letting us know Nanny Jan.
I'm off to google those names I don't recognise. :)
(the only ones I know are Charles Dance, Lulu and Ruby Wax :-[ )
-
Thanks Nanny Jan have made a note in the diary
Last series was far more interesting than previous ones so hope this lot will be too.
sometimes the very well known ones, especially actors, can get a bit carried away!

In the past I've really enjoyed episodes with people I had not previously heard of.
-
Yes, me too PharmaT. :)
It makes no difference at all if I know the celebrity or not - an interesting family history is an interesting family history, no matter who they are. :)
I have found some of the more "famous" quite irritating actually. ;)
-
Did they actually finish broadcasting the last series?
-
Sworn to secrecy but I'm quite looking forward to seeing one of the new episodes. Research has been going on for months but some of the filming only done about 10 days ago.

Yes I think they did. We had a long gap and then the final 2 were shown a couple of weeks apart.
No doubt due to sport of some sort. Wasn't one of them Dr Zoe from Casualty?

Don't remember that one did I miss it I wonder? When was it?
-
I believe you watched it on 22 Feb :)
-
Sunetra Sarker (Dr Zoe in Casualty) was programme number 9 and she found she was related to Gandhi.
The final episode was Sophie Raworth, newsreader a couple of weeks later.

Thanks for letting us know Nanny Jan. I will certainly be watching it again, for entertainment value if nothing else ::) ::)
Wonder what Adil Ray will be like - perhaps we will find out that he is actually related to a Mr Khan ;D ;D

Apparently the series is to air in two five-episode blocks, rather than continuously.
If the last series is anything to go by, that means the final programme of the series will be shown sometime in 2018, having been delayed by a football match between two non-UK countries, a snooker tournament, a specially extended edition of EastEnders to mark their 10,000th on-screen disaster, and urgent re-runs of some celebrity chef's Christmas Cooking series.
-

youre quite right - now I know who the person is rather than screen person I remember.
Thanks for that

You may have been sworn to secrecy, aghadowey - but the Mail on Sunday has blabbed spoilers about Charles Dance in today's edition! :-/

That's a pity - wish they wouldn't do that as it takes all the fun and surprise out of it - I try to avoid reading newspaper stuff if I can

I was just about to post regarding the Bloomin Daily Mail.. it ruins everything regarding TV Progs... I am going to have to stop reading it altogether, .. I dont really like it its just a coffee time read, but the grammar spelling and fake news is now beyond a joke..

Well we know who he is related to now ,but I'm sure there are other twists and turns on the way that will be interesting none-the-less.

Like others on here, I thought with the last series "they" had got back on the right formula again, actually going back in time, rather than spending time "playing" at doing a (usually very recent) ancestor's day job!
No idea myself about Charles Dance's ancestry, just think he's a rather good actor! Not heard of all the others, but - I've made a note to watch the series. No chance of ever encountering anyone related to my lot cropping up, but really enjoy most of them. Probably will get irritated at Ruby Wax, I suspect......
-
Wouldn't spoil it for me, I've no idea who Charles Dance is. I assume he's someone off that strictly boring programme I've never watched?
-
Charles Dance is an actor!
-
NOOO far from strictly boring.. He has STAGE -FILM AND TV credits to his name...
he is a great ACTOR to my mind...

Best known for Jewel in the Crown I think.
-
Also Game of Thrones - until the end of series 4!!
He's been in all sorts of different acting roles.
Now Lulu & Ruby Wax might get on my wick!😀
So long as they keep to same formula as last time and not stick with one family member will be good
-
Ruby Wax & Fearne Cotton have a sort of connection but pretty sure this won't come out in the programmes ;D
-

Shhh, everybody keep shtum about Craig Revel Horwood.. .
-
Jewel in the Crown, Game of Thrones? Seen neither of them!

Craig Revel H......wasn't he the bloke who.......... ;D ;D ;D
I've never seen Game of Thrones either Ray.
-
Jewel in the Crown, Game of Thrones? Seen neither of them!
Jewel in the Crown was a wonderful dramatisation (first shown in 1984) of 'The Raj Quartet' by Paul Scott. Some superb actors and very well worth watching. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jewel_in_the_Crown_(TV_series)

OOH Ray ---
Jewel in the Crown, Game of Thrones? Seen neither of them!
I too have never ::) seen either and wouldn't watch either, but the attributes he has are far from limited so judging too quickly I think..
He may not have an interesting 'pauper to king' line to follow, we shall see, but credit for his acting ability should be given.
I fight his cause - as I would any person that deserves it. (to MY mind) -
Rather him than some, no talent ex 'reality' show (can I bear to use the word) 'star'.......
(And in any case - he attended the same Uni -- as me!!! so there :P )

Marvellous! You Haven't heard of Charles Dance OBE.
What a wonderful leveller this site is. ;D
Any time I'm beginning to think I might be a bit special I know where to come!! ;)
-
Jewel in the Crown is so long back, that I had almost forgotten about it! (Except for my recent love of travelling to India and discovering that I can cook Indian food!
FS
-
Haven't seen Game of Thrones, but he was Lord Vetinari in Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal". :D
-
I greatly enjoyed "The Jewel in the Crown", the first time round - unusually, because even when young I'd learned to avoid dramatisation of books I had enjoyed - and I'd enjoyed reading Paul Scott's "Raj Quartet" over the summer. That's the main thing I can name him for - never seen "Game of Thrones" - but Dance is reliably good whatever he seems to turn up in.

Just managed to not read the spoiler that Peter from Lost Cousins wrote in his latest newsletter!
I don't understand why papers have to print information that will completely spoil watching the programme. Takes all the element of surprise out of it.
Hope I can manage to avoid anything else that's been printed before I actually watch it!!
Caroline

Oh..... that has just reminded me - I used to get emails etc from Peter... maybe I discontinued it.

I think that if you haven't logged in to Lost Cousins actual web site for a period of time then you don't receive the newsletters..
I find them very interesting and he keeps you up to speed with all the latest info ... it was just the fact he'd written about the WDYTYA that I thought was a pity!
Caroline
-
I accidentally read that spoiler in the Lost Cousins newsletter. >:(
Rather than blurting it out he should have just provided the link for anyone who wished to read it, and made it very clear that the link provided some information which would may ruin the programme for some viewers. :(
I thought it a bit out of order actually.
I never log into Lost Cousins but I still receive the newsletters. :)
-
Just spotted this........Phil Davis (recently seen as Jud in Poldark) is the new narrator, taking over from Cheri Lunghi.
-
Now Lulu & Ruby Wax might get on my wick!
Would agree with you on Lulu she seems to forget at times where she comes from >:( ;D
Rosie
-
That will be odd listening to another voice doing the narration have got quite used to Cheri and a man this time too.....
I agree Ruskin - just managed to stop myself from reading the spoiler on Lost Cousins!
You're lucky you still get the newsletters then Ruskin as Peter did comment some time back that to keep getting them you needed to have actually logged on from time to time?
Caroline
-
Men were the narrators before Cheri; David Morrisey and Mark Strong.
-
Now Lulu & Ruby Wax might get on my wick!
Don't worry! Some of the more interesting programmes have had subjects who I reckon are awful in their TV personas. It's the story revealed that counts.
-
I know I
probably sound like a broken record but I hope we get some English agricultural labourer/industrial labourer history for a change ::).
-
No Steve McFadden, John Nettles, Ross Kemp or Chris Chittell yet then?
I think the BBC dont want the humble ag lab, soap boiler, drayman in the celebs trees. They want the tear jerker, the epic love story, the huge scandal, the transportation to Oz, the one who did religious marches and was an inventor.
-
In most cases our ag lab ancestors didn't leave much of a paper trail apart from bmd and census. It would not be easy to pad out a TV programme with just that, so I can understand that the programme makers need to find an angle. I don't think they mind if they find "lowly" people along the way as long as they can connect it to an interesting story.
The well to do left more behind, so there is more to find - it's probably just that simple.
There have been some humble ancestors in some celebrities' trees (Jeremy Paxman's comes to mind though there are others).
-
I agree with Ruskie, it's not that they are against ag labs but that they need a story to make a programme and a story is easier with more records. Remember they are also trying to appeal to non genealogists.
I don't specifically remember ag labs but some episodes have had humble ancestors, Ricky Tomlinson's ancestor was a carter for example. I can't remember who but I'm sure the workhouse has been discussed more than once.
-
Jeremy Paxman had workhouse ancestors.
Martin Freeman had syphillitic ancestors.
... just two that come to mind ....
-
The case study they use for Ag Labs in the WDYTYA Encyclopedia is David Tennant
Scottish, not English, unfortunately for Sally
-
I think there are several reasons why programmes researching the family history of "unknowns" would be of little interest to the programme makers:
A "personality" attracts viewers who are interested in that person - as well as all of us who are interested in family history
An "unknown" subject might be super for us, if we were the subject of it - but probably of limited interest to most people, and a whole series would be rather repetitive.
- Interestingly, there was a letter printed in the "Radio Times" for the coming week, again wishing for the family history of unknowns rather than "celebs"......
I must admit, I'd rather the celebs, on the whole.
-
Many of the 'celebs' are unknowns to me, so it makes no difference. If a story is interesting and the person involved articulate and engaging then I'm happy. Obviously with a celeb there is the advantage of them being able to do pieces to camera with little effort as they are professionals whereas with an ordinary person there would have to be a certain amount of training which would make things more expensive and laborious for the production company.
-
Excellent points there, Barnes612, the vast majority of those celebs are indeed unknown to me, too, I should have added the "camera confident" bit to my reasons, too, - it was there in my mind.
