Title: Missing parents from census.
Post by: Philezra on Friday 23 June 17 21:35 BST (UK)
Hi everyone. I have a conundrum unless I'm being daft.

Alice Barrow married William Russell 1814 in Bolton. I think they have Sarah bapt 1815 and John bapt 1817.

Census 1841 shows William 45, Alice 45, Joseph 15, James 13, William 10, Mary 7.

Census 1851 has all of them except William jnr.

Census 1861 has all except William or Mary. However, there is Mary Barrett, 4 Granddaughter.

Can I find the parents?? No. Logic would suggest that Mary has married "somebody" Barrett.....

Cannot find her/them.

Can anyone solve this? Could be mistranscribed but I cannot find a marriage for a Russell + Barrett anywhere.

Phil

Thank you

Have you looked on freebmd for a birth for Mary and then used the GRO maiden name search to find her mothers maiden name?  Not all relationship entries on census returns are correctly entered ;D

Hello,

There is a marriage November 30th 1856 for Mary Russell, father William, to John Barrow.
Perhaps it is just an error.

GRO indexes show Mary Barrow with mmn Russell.
1861 shows Mary Barrow with two other young children  1861 2822/36/9

I have found the same records as heywood and agree that the enumerator may have misheard the surname as Barrett instead of Barrow.

So Mary marries a Barrow, just her father did!! Need to connect them....

No sign of John though.

Apparently his father was Samuel. Need them together in a census.

For your consideration

1841 538/28/15

Samuel Barrow   37 yrs Boiler Maker
Mary Barrow   35 yrs
John Barrow   5yrs 10 months (I think)
Isaac Barrow 4 months

John is shown as 'not born in county'.
This would seem to be Samuel B and Mary Williams - married in Liverpool. This fits with 1851 where they are in Horwich but no John  :-\

so Samuel married in Liverpool
then reappears in Bury where their son Isaac is baptised in June 1841

That's right - Samuel states he is from Helliwell and Mary is from Liverpool. Then they presumably move to Horwich. Whether this is the correct family though needs further evidence.

just to complete the family, there is another Mary baptised 1825 who presumably dies

Lancann. Where did you find the 1825 baptism?

All of you - a very big thank you for all you help.

There is a John Barrow in 1901 at an institution in Farnworth as a pauper/inmate.....

I actually thought, afterwards, that you were referring to Mary Barrow, daughter of Samuel + Mary, born 1825.

From what I can glean, the rest of them, John ecxepted, couls have died between 1851 and 1861; Samuel snr 1853; Mary 1851; Samuel jnr 1860 and Isaac 1858.....

Living in Sharples (Bolton)

John Barrow born Birkenhead, Cheshire with Mary, daughter Alice and three more children.

1891 3112/47/14
Still in Sharples

John - b Birkenhead now a widower with the three younger children - there ages are not correct though  :-\

Now that it looks as though John Barrow is born Birkenhead, I would think that he is the (unmarried though) John boarding in Wallsend in 1861.

1861 3835/36/33

Birkenhead is transcribed as Burlouhead on one site.

Wonderful stuff from you all. I see that Emma was a boarder with the Brooks family......although husband to be wasn't there.

I wonder if the John that is witness to James' marriage is John senior?

Earlier, I saw that Herbert Barrow is boarding with Robert Brooks in 1901 I think. I also think Robert is a widower by then.

There is a John, son of John Barrow. He married Sarah Crook in 1901. Could be him as the witness. John snr may have died.

Where did you find that marriage please. I can't seem to find it

Edit found marriage of Sarah to John BARRON. I think it was originally mistranscribed onto the register index. The certificate looks more like Barrow but it is in distinct. John age 26 Sarah age 25 father John boilermaker.

I did wonder about the James one I posted earlier as it is the only time I have noticed John as a moulder rather than boilermaker
