Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help with this chap as I think he became a US citizen.
What I have so far is that he was born Liverpool 1889 mmn Loveday
Baptized 16th Aug 1889 St Peter's, Liverpool
1901 at home with parents in Liverpool
1911 can't put details but he is on it in the right part of the world and with the trade I would expect
1914 5th August marries Nellie Scotland in Liverpool
1918 appears to have been in the Merchant Navy for the war - he was an electrician
During the 1920s he is back and forth on ships to the USA as crew - still an electrician, then in 1942 it looks as if he is on the US draft list - so has he become a US citizen, has Nellie gone as well, do they have children?
Any information welcome

Thank you Sandra.
What does the declaration of intention in 1927 mean? Did they mean to become US citizens but didn't do anything about it until Ayrton swore that statement in 1941?
I will look into that Nellie Brundrit death - it is likely to be her, in which case where were they living the UK or USA.

"As a general rule, naturalization was a two-step process that took a minimum of 5 years. After residing in the United States for 2 years, an alien could file a "declaration of intent" (so-called "first papers") to become a citizen. After 3 additional years, the alien could "petition for naturalization." After the petition was granted, a certificate of citizenship was issued to the alien. These two steps did not have to take place in the same court."

Thank you Shelley, that has helped me understand the naturalization process.
An interesting read and although I am used to seeing women regarded as mere chattels I was very surprised to see that women lost their US citizenship if they married an alien even if they had never left US soil! And within living memory.

Thank you for this Shelley. Is Irene M a place or a person? If a person, is there any indication as to who she is? The Nellie Brundrit who dies in Ormskirk 1940 does look to be the Nellie Scotland that Ayrton married in 1914.

It should be a wife.

I think this is him in the 1940 census listed as Aaron - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K4J2-66Y The 497 on the street number matches the address on the WWII draft registration card, and the prior page says it was Beacon.

Per Social Security claims, Ayrton Brundit born 20 Apr. 1889 died 13 Aug. 1954. There was a death claim made on 17 Sep. 1954.
Massachusetts death index has Brundrit, Ayrton died 1954 in Boston.

It looks like Ayrton filed 2 different Declaration of Intentions. One is from 12 Jan. 1927. That one says he was married to Nellie, who was residing at Coniston, Lancashire, England. Another one was filed 14 Mar. 1941 and said Nellie was deceased.
His petition for naturalization from 3 Nov. 1943 says that Nellie never entered the US. The witnesses for that petition said that they had known Ayrton since 1931 and he had lived in the US continuously since then in Watertown, Waltham, W. Newton, and Boston, Massachusetts. The witnesses were an oil service man and a mechanic, so presumably they were co-workers.

It looks like there were funeral notices in the Boston Herald and Boston Traveler for Ayrton on 17 and 18 Aug. 1954. This is a subscription site, but you can see a bit of the results from scrolling around - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kax/

Thank you all very much. Seaweed I do have that photograph from some time ago either through FindMyPast or Ancestry - can't remember which and at present I'm not subscribed to either.
Shellyesq, your posts have answered my questions and as always with family history left more ;)
It looks as if Nellie and Ayrton's marriage broke down, or Nellie didn't want to leave the UK - after all Coniston is a pretty beautiful place to live and the USA was unknown, or maybe Nellie was going out but Ayrton met Irene M, or maybe Nellie met someone............ Let's just hope they were both happy. With them not having children it is unlikely that I will ever know but it has been really interesting to fill in the rest of Ayrton's life.
Thank you all again, it is much appreciated
