Title: Looking for a place called Snob or Snobe near Fetteresso please.
Post by: hurworth on Saturday 01 July 17 04:57 BST (UK)
I'm on a roll today having found the death of an ancestor.  Her informant was a son I'd never heard of!  She's Margaret Mowat who was baptised in Durris in 1782, daughter of John Mowat and Margaret Marr.  She married William Marr of Fetteresso at Glenbervie on 14 Dec 1805.

I'm looking at the baptism of John Mar at Fetteresso on 16 Jan 1807.  It says John lives at Snob.  The witnesses are John Masson in Snobe and Alexander Mollinson in Mergie.  I can see Mergie along Slug Road, but would anyone know where Snob or Snobe is please?

This site refers to a Snob Cottage, Fetteresso  http://ncap.org.uk/frame/8-1-2-2-37-393

Looks like the same place but slightly different location?  http://maps.nls.uk/view/74427598#zoom=5&lat=3501&lon=2388&layers=BT   http://maps.nls.uk/view/74949339#zoom=4&lat=2051&lon=3162&layers=BT

This map shows it adjacent to a Mergie http://maps.nls.uk/view/74427597#zoom=4&lat=4097&lon=14158&layers=BT

Thank you very much!  And the last map has Clochanshiels where they were living in the 1860s.

Possibly, Skoosh, but perhaps more likely "snab" or "snob" meaning a projecting piece of land, often projecting towards water of some sort. There are quite a few places with the name.

Hi,
Snab was located a short distance NE of Clachanshiels, and is shown on the attached 1771-1806 map by William Garden.  It is difficult to determine whether the letter is an "o" or an "a", but I would suggest that the latter is most likely given the time frame, and the alleged association of "posh" (Port out, Starboard Home) and sea travel to India. http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400263

Thank you Istris.  The map brings it all to life and I recognise so many places that come up in the records.

These are my in-laws.  My husband has driven along Slug Rd on his way to Durrus Crossroads and had no idea that he was driving past other places where his ancestors lived.  But Google street view is excellent.
