Hi Janette,
Oh yes he has many spellings of his names, the above is what was used the most.

Hi KT...
The link given by Minnie in reply #2 mentions the following...
---
Johannes Kaallem (John) MÖLLER (MILLER)
[...]
6. Information from Juliana BANNISTER.
"The Gazette," 17 Apr 1893, p 789
---
The Gazette entry is for the following...
From: Johann Kewlam Möller, Gisborne Date: 14 February 1893 Subject: Memorial for naturalisation
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24756507 (https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24756507)
Have you seen this Memorial or do you know if it's been transcribed on Ancestry. If so, does it mention a birth village/town.
Regards

Hi Beg.
Juliana's , her dad & myself have all that information, there are my cousins. It's his death that's the mystery. On know he comes from Bergen, Norway, no idea when or how he came to NZ, thought the ITM might shed some light on how long in Auckland before he married 16yr Benta.
Thanks Spades, looking forward to seeing it.

1875 Bergen Census - Johannes Kvalem and Family at top but Johannes and Ullrik were missing at the time and were recorded at the bottom.
Ullrik was a captain of a small commercial vessel (Jæktefører) and Johannes was with him at that time.

Also, the name Kvalem (Qvalem) was apparently a farm name from Manger Parish in Hordaland.
There are some trees online to do with this family.

A John MOLLER was on board the Gartmore in Sept 1893, fell overboard and drowned. No idea where this boat was leaving or going to. Apparently mentioned in findmypast.
Is there a passenger list for this boat .
Trying to see if was John (Johannes). Last seem in Gisborne after May 1893.

Thanks KT
I am sorry I cannot help out with Johannes' death but anything from Scandinavia is not a problem. I have though seen the Gisborne record from The New Zealand Gazette on Ancestry.

Is there a passenger list for this boat .
Hi KT...
From what Ian has found it's quite possible that your man was crew. If he fell overboard you would think it would be mentioned in the crew list agreement, especially as the Agreement has a section entitled...
"PARTICULARS OF DISCHARGE
To be filled in by the Master upon Discharge, Death or Desertion of any member of his crew"
In 1892 the only British registered vessel named Gartmore had the official number 90037
1892 - British Registered Sailing Vessels

The Maritime History Archive has an E2 Agreement (i.e crew list) from 1893 for that vessel

Be aware that research carried out by the Maritime History Archive is reeeeeal expensive ($50-ish).

Not sure if there is a UK version of Spades :) but you might try asking for a lookup of the following ... not sure if it's a crew list or just details of the vessel... I suspect the latter
The National Archives - UK
http://tinyurl.com/y8lxkkqx (http://tinyurl.com/y8lxkkqx)
---
For what it's worth, the National Archives (UK) has another Gartmore from the same period.
The National Archives - UK

This vessel has the official number 79229 but that corresponds to the steamship Bedford so I'm guessing the National Archives has it wrong.
1892 - British Registered Steam Ships

Either way, the Maritime History Archive has an 1893 crew list for that vessel as well...

A John MOLLER was on board the Gartmore in Sept 1893, fell overboard and drowned.
Just re-read Johannes' Naturalization Record from 17 May 1893 and noticed his occupation was Labourer. He may then not have been a seaman at that time.

Ian & Beg
Just trying to eliminate this John MOLLER. I know that John was a Labourer and was in Gisborne 1892/1893 as I have compared his signature from the naturalisation form to a probate that he was witness to in Gisborne 1892. Did not return to Norway . He doesn't appear after 1893 in any ER, Just disappeared. Wonder why Benta waited until 1898 to remarry when she had a child in 1896 to Carl and registered Carl as the father in Timaru ( must get printout to see what else she put down, only have certificate) appeared in Auckland 1896 using the name WAHLSTROM. Carl was also a mariner and traveled around NZ.
Thanks any for all your help
