Title: Devlins in Cobh (Queenstown), Cork, 1800s
Post by: neverendingstory#01 on Tuesday 04 July 17 04:23 BST (UK)
Hi
This is my first post here - hope I'm doing it right.
Kate Devlin (1863-1915) married Albert John Hicks (1855-1909) in 1882 in Cobh, Co. Cork.
Her father was listed as Henry.
A witness was Frank Devlin (brother, cousin, uncle?).
Anyone know more about these Devlins?
Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat.
I can see their marriage
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1882/10962/8007049.pdf
Both Albert and his father were Stone Cutters and Henry Delvin was an Army Pensioner.
On Daugher Jessie's birth in 1883 Albert is a Mason and in England.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1883/02741/2007830.pdf
And Jessie in 1901 appears to be living with her grandmother and Aunt
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Queenstown_Urban_No__1/The_Mall/1138441/
It says niece but this is often the case with grandchildren and the address is the same as the marriage, and Mary Delvin grandmother was the informant on the birth.

Can you tell us more about the family did they have more children, did they both leave Ireland, was Albert Irish?

I'll ask a moderator to move this to the Cork board.

Thanks Sinann, hallmark and dathai for your prompt and very helpful info and links.
Mary Kate Hicks was also known as Mabel.
Kate Devlin and Albert Hicks first two children were Jessie 1882 and Mary Kate (Mabel) 1884, both born in Cobh.
After that Kate and Albert moved to Newport, Wales, between 1884 and 1886 where all their other children were born.
(I note Kate's dad died in 1886 in Cobh - maybe that had something to do with the move?).
Strangely they left Jessie (aged between 2 and 4 years) behind in Cobh - family lore says with her grandmother (confirmed by one of the links you sent me) - though another census document has her as niece. This leaving behind a very young child seems very weird to me, though they must have had their reasons.
With regards to Henry Devlin and Mary Power (parents of Kate Devlin) it seems they had their first three children in 1859, 1863, and 1867, then there's a 6 year gap for the next three 1873, 1876 and 1879. Henry was in the British Army so he may have been posted far from home?
My aim now is to go backwards from Henry Devlin and Mary Power.
Thanks so much.

Cant quite make my mind up on this one
Mary Kate Hicks was known as Mabel
Could Mary Ellen Devlin born 1901 to Patrick Devlin and Ellen Guest
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01959/1756126.pdf
be also known as Lillian ?
Lillian Devlin age 18 daughter of Patrick Devlin married David Lennox a soldier in Queenstown 1918
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1918/09706/5521028.pdf

in 1941 a Patrick Devlin age 67 from 25 The Mall died his informant was Honorah Lennox granddaughter.

Hi dathai
Wrote a reply earlier but site crashed & I lost it, so here I go again.
Mary Ellen would have been 17 in March 1918 but probably pushed her age up a fraction for the marriage.
The witness Kittey Devlin may be her aunt Mary Kate Devlin, from whom my wife's family descends.
Maybe this is evidence that Lilian = Mary Ellen.
Are you related to this line?

Hi
I am not related just a researcher.

Kittey Devlin is most likely Patrick's daughter Katie age 9 on 1911 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Queenstown/The_Mall/405152/

her birth 1902 as Catherine

Wouldn't she have been too young (16) to be a witness at a wedding?

A totally different era,a bride could be as young as 15 in those day's with parental consent so why not a witness and who's to say her age was questioned by the priest.

Why do you think a sister more likely than an aunt?

Because Catherine is more likely to be called Kitty.

however she appears to have married a Royal Marine by the name of Edward Moat 1921

I have a record of birth/baptism of Francis Devlin in May/June 1859. After the parents are listed two people Pat Quinn and Hannah Power. Would it be correct to assume these are witnesses to the birth registration or godparents at a baptism? Nothing at the top of the page to tell me.

No birth registrations until 1864 so it's a baptism so they are godparents/sponsors.

I've been looking everywhere for a marriage certificate for Henry Devlin and Mary Powers 1858 probably in Cobh.
Can you help me?
Trying to find the parents (or at least fathers) of these two plus places of birth.

Hi dathai

I am a grandson of Mary Ellen Devlin and actually have her actual death certificate.

She was born on the 12th January 1901
She married David Lennox on the 28th March 1918
Her death certificate shows she died on the 30th April 1961 and has her age as 61 years but according to her birth date, she would have been 60 years
