Title: Colston Milton Parish church (Church of Scotland)
Post by: Kate B on Tuesday 04 July 17 15:39 BST (UK)
Asking on behalf of a friend:
Any idea where I can get old photos of it?  Tried the Mitchell, but no luck.

I've been told it must have been near Wigton Street (now demolished), near the Astoria picture house / Garscube Road / Possil Road.

Thanks

The present Church appears to be in Egilsay Crescent.

A few things you might like to try for your friend -

The church has a facebook page.
Try emailing the minister Rev. Christopher Rowe.
Church of Scotland Offices, 121 George Street, Edinburgh.

If you google the church's name it will give you the links.

Has your friend ever seen the Glasgow Photo Polis site - lots of old photographs of Glasgow. Again just google search the name.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks Dorrie.

The church we're looking for was not in THE Milton, which is a housing scheme built in the 1950s, so the church in Egilsay Street is not the one we are looking for...it's too recently built.

The one we're trying to find was possibly in the Possil area of Glasgow and around 1920-1930.  It was where her ancestors were married.  The groom was also the minister of the church at the time!  (I wonder if he married himself  ;D)

I'll email the CofS in Edinburgh.

PS Love the Polis site!

Sorry, that's the only one I could find.

If you would like to give me the name of the minister/bridegroom I could ask my daughter to see if she can find out anything as she works at the Church of Scotland, Head Office.

Glad you liked the Polis  ;D ;D

The 1940's map of Glasgow does not show any church in that immediate area - could it have been demolished by then ? (or possibly part of the Western District Hospital)

The nearest Church appears to be St Georges in the Field in St Georges Road while there is another in St Georges Road but south of Woodside Road

Sorry, Dorrie – I got it ever-so-slightly wrong   ::).

The reverse of her Grannie’s 1927 birth cert has been stamped by the church and says “Recorded by Revd William Seright at Milton Parish Church”.   The Grannie was born in Wigton Street, in the "burgh of Milton", so presumably, the church was local.

We researched the Revd William Seright and sure enough, he served at St George’s in the Fields and then moved to “neighbouring Milton Parish Church”. The Serights are not her rellies (my mistake!)

It’s simply a photo of the church that she’s interested in at the moment.  It's my friend's first attempt at doing her family history, and already we’ve hit a brick wall!

FALKRYN
Thanks for your input.  I'd agree that the church was no longer in existence by the 1940, but it must have been there in 1927...maybe it was just a wee hall of some sort.

Thank you both for your interest.

Checking older maps shows a U.F. Church in Lyon Street just a short distance south of Garscube Cross this building is also in the 1940 map and is the closest Church

If it is this church the Virtual Mitchell site has an image showing the building in pretty bad shape in 1964

Can I ask if your friend has a copy of the marriage certificate as in Scotland it usually gives the address where the actual marriage took place. This could help track down the church.

The record would also show which form of the Church the ceremony was in accordance with - if it was the Free Church it would  point to the Lyon Street Church

So sorry for the delay in replying.  Friend has just returned from holiday and her relative has "paperwork showing the address of LYON street".

Thank you both so much for your help.

The church in Lyon Street was a United Free Church in 1927 just as Falkryn said in an earlier reply.

(In 1929 most of the United Frees joined with the Church of Scotland although there were a few who didn't)

Follow the link that Falkryn gave to the Virtual Mitchell. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only surviving photograph.

My grandparents were married in 1940 in Milton Parish Church - it was Church of Scotland then.  My grandfather lived at 531 St. Georges Road, my grandmother at 229 Garscube Road, so both were literally around the corner.
