Title: Long Shot - William Harris
Post by: Lensmeister on Tuesday 04 July 17 22:00 BST (UK)
Hope someone can assist as this one has been a stumbling block for more years than I care to remember.

In 1861 David Charles Harris was born in Salisbury Cresent, Newington, Surrey the son of William Harris and Emma Nicholls.

William is given as a Ostler on David Charles birth certificate and later on William is a Horsekeeper on David Charles' marriage certificate.

William Harris married Emma Nicholls 11 Jul 1858 in St John's Waterloo and William's father is George Harris - a cabman.

The 1861 census shows William and Emma at Salisbury Crescent. William gives his place of birth as Surrey, Walworth and is aged 24.
This places his birth c.1837.

I've looked William in the GRO (when at Myddleton Place) and at the borough archives to no avail.

Can anyone help?

It's not clear from your post but I am assuming you are trying to establish William's parentage?

Have you checked the 1841 and 1851 census for him?

Here is the 1851 reference

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5 so many births went unregistered.

The 1851 entry is also on Family Search so you have his mothers name as well as his fathers so can use that information to search for a parental marriage and a possible baptismal entry for William

A family tree has his parents as George and Susannah although there is a 15 year age gap between them so maybe a second marriage for George.

Birth for William on the tree a little later - 1839 so I would check for possible births in that year just in case.
