Title: Mary Ann Hopple born Smilelawer???
Post by: jacqueline cox on Friday 07 July 17 15:13 BST (UK)
Local knowledge might help! Mary Ann Turner was baptised at Felton in 1836, d/o Thomas Turner and Susan. She married Thomas Hepple in South Shields in 1867. Variously gives Holy Stone, Nbd, Rothbury, Nbd etc as place of birth in census returns, but Ancestry's transcription for 1891 RG 12/ 4169/ 136/ 20 gives Smilawer, Nbd and FindMyPast gives Swirland. Both rubbish! I know "---laws" is quite common, but you might know better.
NB her name is "Hopple" in FindMyPast for 1891 by which time she was a widow.

Agree.  (The Holy Stone in 1851 is the mother, Mary Ann is Newton on the Moor (hard against Swarland)

Swarland was also where father Thomas says he was born and he was baptised in Felton also (less than three miles between them).

Yes to all of you, but what it actually says in the census is surely not Swarland? But Newton in the Moor is pretty precise, too.
So they didn't have to go far to find each other. Thank you.
Can anyone find a convincing place of origin for her mother, Susan Young? I don't believe she was the one baptised in Newcastle in 1817; no Edwards or Graces in her childrens' names.

I looked at the census image and it does look like there is an 'i' in there, though the writing is dire

Do you have the baptism record from Felton? What was the abode on there?

I looked on Family Search and nothing coming up in Felton for a baptism 1836 for a child of that name and those parents -

though there IS a record for a Mary Ann Turner, baptised 1836 and parents Thomas and Susan in Lucker . The image on the BTs said this family lived at Newham Buildings and the father was a husbandman.

There was a farm called Smiley Law on the 1860 farms list which listed as being in Newham.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kd5/ That is the Lucker BTs baptism record, the abode matches but not the father's occupation. I suppose its possible that the BT's have an error so would suggest checking the original register entry to see what that says.

Unless you have a copy of the entry which says she was baptised in Felton, that is the nearest I can find.

No marriage for Susan and Thomas, (why? people did get married unless one was married already - unlikely in view of their ages); no other clue. Turners are straightforward; Susan Young - no clue about parent/ parents/ siblimgs. Wooler is too far north, Newcastle too far south; it looks as though she is from somewhere in the vicinity of Holystone, but there are no other leads to follow up on.
