Title: Tombstone inscriptions
Post by: Annie65115 on Tuesday 11 July 17 21:59 BST (UK)
In the aisle of my local church are 2 paving stones which are normally covered by carpet but which I caught sight of today for the first time. The inscriptions are in Latin and I'm trying to make sense of them. I wasn't able to photograph them; what follows is an attempt made at transcription by someone who works in the church.

HIC
SEPVULTA
IACET ANNA
VXOR IOHIS
IACKSON GEN
IVXTA HOC
RECONDIT
ET FILIA
ALEXAND
SOUTHWIC
D: D: OLI
RECTOR
DE WAD
TON IN
LINCOL
QV 7Eo
X11 D17Eo
An
7E TATS
REPARAT
LVTIS 1

It seems some of the lettering on the end of the lines is missing. I can get that in this tomb lies Anna, wife of Iohis(?) Jackson, and (presumably) daughter of Alexander Southwick, rector of somewhere (Waddington?) in Lincolnshire. No dates.

Can anyone pad this out? Many thanks!

I agree with most of what you have.

Here lies buried Ann, wife of John Jackson, gentleman, (who is) buried near here, the daughter of Alexander Southwick D.D. (= Doctor of Divinity), formerly Rector of Wad(?)ton in (the county of ?) Lincoln

I can’t at present make much of the last few lines. They might include something like Anno <number?> aetatis (= in the ?th year of her age).

Looking further, the Clergy Database has Alexander Sowthaike or Southaike as Rector of Waddington, in the diocese of Lincoln, in 1597.

I would suspect there are no digits in the inscription and what are given as '1','7' and 'o' are something else.  For example could the '7Eo' actually be 'Æ' perhaps with a curl?  And your 'X11' actually 'XII' for twelve/twelfth'?

Also I think the amount of missing text from the end of each line increases towards the end so maybe you won't get a full meaning without the missing parts.

FamilySearch has a marriage of Ann Southeick and Jo. Jackson on 21 November 1628 at St Paul, Lincoln.

Thanks, everyone. This has thrown a small cat amongst pigeons as literature confidently states that no-one outside the family who owned the church was buried inside!

I'll have to get to the archives and see if I can find a burial date.

I suspect that Mr Jackson's stone is next to Ann's but the transcription has more q marks than text, so I'll wait until I can see these stones again and see what i can make of it.

Thanks again!
