Does the Archives have copies of the applications for naturalisation in 1880? I have found the letters of naturalisation issued, and we have the person's origin and date of naturalisation from the index.

Hi John
Does this help ?

Thanks for that, Lu - what I want to know is if the file referenced for the person is available - it should have the date of his arrival in New Zealand. I have attached a snip of his details from the document in your link. The file reference is 20/4/178 1880/1223 & 2256.

Hi John
Probably best to send an enquiry direct to Archives NZ I would think.

FWIW my experience is that these files still exist and I have a copy of one or two now.

Thanks, Lu, and thank you for the information, Twiggy Tree. I've sent a query about Walter to Archives.

Hi John,
I should be able to get hold of a naturalisation file for you. I suspect it will be held at the Wellington office.

Thank you, spades. I'm hoping that Archives will come back to me with a reference, to make it easy to request.

No worries. ;D

Hello...
For what it's worth, the record number you gave (20/4/178) brings up the following...
Naturalisation - Copy of Letters - Pinkiert, Henry
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24213573 (https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24213573)
On page 845 of The Gazette (Issue 58, 1880) three men are granted naturalisation on 26 May 1880. The men are your Walter, the above Henry PINKIERT and one Charles Henry DODGE.
Archway has no mention of the papers for your Walter or for Charles Henry DODGE. Maybe they are all bundled up together with the papers for Henry PINKIERT.
Or not :-)
Regards
Beg

Spades - Archives has replied, and has given me the same reference as Beg listed, above (thanks, Beg).
R24213573 ACGO 8333 IA1 1514 / 20/4/178
Person's name Henry Pinkiert.
Jonathan from Archives noted this:
"Please note that due to a listing oddity record R24213573 is described as relating to a Henry Pinkiert. I have checked the actual file and I can confirm that the record consists of papers relating to both men."
If you are able to copy the papers relating to Walter Brungot, that would be wonderful.
John.

Will do.
Given the cyclonic weather pattern here it's now likely to be next week.
